I've been reading through the threads and one thing that is brought up often is what a crap place Zagreb is. I disagree. Zagreb is a beautiful city. It has its shortcomings, but no city in this world is perfect. Let's see if we can come up with 101 places worth visiting in Zagreb. I will name a few to begin with (in no particular order):
1. Aromatica shop in Vlaska 2. Tolkien's Pub in Gornji Grad 3. B.P. Club 4. Mestrovic Atellier 5. Staying at the Regent Esplanade Hotel
I will let others take over before I make more suggestions of my own. Don't bother posting if you have nothing kind to say.

; ;D ;D ;D ;DD
Zoo
Flower market
Fish Market
Main Square to people watch & watch kids play in water.
Churches
Botanical Garden
So much more but I will leave something for the others to write.
There is always something to do in Zagreb whether you live there or you live in other part of Croatia (and just visit every once and while) or you are visiting from out of country. There is something for everyone.

OK, not a toursit thing but true (IMHO) nonetheless.

People do throw coins (over their left shoulder, for luck) in that little fountain on the main square, which is called Mandusevac. It's been that way ever since the fountain was rebuilt, when I was little. When speaking of Mandusevac there's a legend regarding how Zagreb got its name, but I won't get into that now.
Some of the places to see in Zagreb:
All of the Upper Town, in history known as Kaptol and Gradec - especially Strossmayer's promenade and Vraz's walk, with the astronomical observatory - Kamenita vrata (13th ct.) - Kula Lotrscak dating from the 13th century, which is also a gallery and where, on the Southern side, a cannon strikes every day at noon - Klovicevi dvori, a great museum - Markov trg (St. Mark's Square, 13th ct.), which is of great political and historical value and in its centre there's a gothic church, St. Mark's church with a colourful roof presenting national arms – that of Slavonia, Dalmatia, central Croatia and Zagreb. Opposite, there is the seat of Croatian government and Parliament, "Sabor" - and the most obvious, the cathedral... but there's so much more!
All of the city centre: King Tomislav's Square; Trg Marsala Tita with the baroque HNK - the national theatre and "Zdenac zivota" ("Well of life"), work of our most famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic ; the so-called Lenucijeva potkova – an assembly of wonderful parks including Zrinjevac, Tomislavac, Strossmayerov trg and Svacicev trg. The old University library on Marulic Square, opposite the botanical garden The Art Pavillion between Zrinjevac and King Tomislav's Square... the Art Pavillion is one of our best museums. Dzamija - former Mestrovic Atelier... now a museum.
Mirogoj, one of the most beautiful cemetaries in Europe
Maksimir – a big, beautiful park with four lakes (with swans, ducks etc... awww) and a ZOO
We could perhaps also include Sljeme - the top of the mountain Medvednica, and Medvednica as a whole... including the "oltar domovine" ("homeland's altar") called Medvedgrad, which is a fortress.
Not to mention all the museums and galleries more than worth seeing.

Some good recommendations there brightside, the only one I disagree with is the zoo, the cages are far too small.
The last time I went there, there was a lion and a tiger in adjoining cages no more than 5 metres wide.
If you don't object to that, then the zoo is an interesting place.
For the night time I believe that sax and bp are the best calls.

And the theatre called Komedija, on Kaptol (pass the cathedral when climbing up, Komedija is on the opposite side, you can't miss it). They have a great programme every year, and terrific actors. This year you could see the Croatian version of Chicago and Full Monty ("Skidajte se do kraja"), which I strongly recommend. You will be able to see those plays again in a couple of months 'cos the season is over for now as far as staging in the theatre is concerned and everything on their repertory is now part of "Jarunfest". On Jarun, you can see Hair ("Kosa") and Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice. www.komedija.hr (you can make reservations online, unfortunately the site is only in Croatian... you can click on "ulaznice" and then have someone translate it for you)

What happened to the English theatre? I recall one being launched last September or was it this September?? I haven't heard anything for a while.
There are usually outdoor musicals on Jarun in English, in the summer, been too busy this year, had anybody seen them? Is it still Jesus Christ Superstar?
If it’s the same motley crew as last year, listen out for the guy who has such a deep voice Barry white sounds like Mickey Mouse…..oooohhh yeah Mini.

Galerija Badrov (Trg Zrtava Fasizma 1). I am a photography enthusiast and I visit this gallery whenever I'm in Zagreb. The exhibitions are very strong and you can pick up some great prints and CDs by Croatian photographers. Definitely worth checking out.

Wow, that Tapio Wirkkala exhibition in MUO looks amazing. Too bad I'll miss it, I'm not in Zagreb until next month. I'm into design as well. Very interesting exhibition by the looks of it.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the closing date of Tapio Wirkkala exhibition. INZG.NET states 21.08. as closing date. MUO states 15.07. as closing date. Brightside, could you check for me on Friday when you go what the correct closing date is. If indeed it is 21.08., then I'll make it. Great!!!

Does anyone know where I could find vintage clothing in Zagreb? I collect 1930's dresses and hats as well as Art Deco jewellery and original movie posters. Any ideas where I could find such things in Zagreb?
