 Split Riva
« Thread Started on May 7, 2007, 1:56pm »

Today was the grand opening of the Riva in Split and I’ve just been down to have a look. I’ve got to say I’m really disappointed in a lot of it. Take away the palm trees and the Palace and it could be in the centre of Milton Keynes or Birmingham, all very modern with it's large slabs of concrete, uncomfortable chic benches and very trendy bins.

The worst thing, though, are the lights. They are huge! Incredibly modern, bright-white, very tall and completely ruining the view of the Palace. A really terrible mistake, unbelievable.

Some parts of the Riva are successful; the parts they’ve paved with Brac stone and the herb garden sections are really nice, but all-in-all it’s completely inappropriate for Split. Hopefully in 10 years this will be realised, they’ll dig up the concrete and get rid of those shocking lights.

Speaking to locals today, the opinion on the Riva is pretty low, virtually all feeling it is too modern for Split and that some decision-makers high up have made a lot of money on this and now we have to live with it.

Looking at the new concrete slabs today, they are filthy already, gobs of chewing gum and dirt ingrained in them. Has anyone here been on it yet who actually likes it?

Looks terrible !!
What's the point of that white steel structure ?
On the upside, it does look better for street performance now.

Those white structures are lights and for the new awnings for the cafes, though why they have to be that high and obtrusive, God knows.

Another pic of the concrete charms of Split's Riva. That's nearly 8 months and quite a few million euros well spent then!

These are the new benches - they're so deep that you have to be a giant to sit comfortably on them. Luckily gravel is provided underneath so there's somewhere to chuck your cigarette butts (a feature many have already taken advantage of). At least they used Brac stone at the water's edge and on the path by the Palace.

What's really depressing though is that this is just the first phase. Next the fountain and it's greenery will be removed from the western end of the Riva, being replaced by more of the endless ugly concrete slabbing and some poxy water feature, and presumably some more of these uncomfortable, stupidly modern benches. And we'll have to put up with another 7 months of building work and disruption to get to this tacky end.

just to add the gaps between the slabs of concrete are about 1cm- perfect for getting the heels of women's shoes stuck! Mind you it is only temporary because they are already being padded with cigarette butts.
The light s are a bit low too maybe 6ft 5in off the ground. Wouldn't advise carrying a child on your shoulders around there, or even an umbrella

Why why why?
It looks terrible. I love Split it’s one of my favorite places (don’t tell my family in Zadar) I will never understand how things are decided in this country.
It really seems that the people in power have no ides of what they have in this country.
They don’t know how to market it. They don’t seem to care if making a buck today will destroy a thing of beauty that people have admiring for centuries.
I will never understand…

its a huge mistake, terrible. probably a result of money laundering and political connections.
it has absolutely nothing to do with diocletians palace , you dont even notice the palm trees anymore. those old sun shades from the 50ss and 60s are gone. now we have star trek in split and it does look like a construction site with totaly stupid sun shade ,etalik retractable structures that look like they were designed by the same person that came up with the paint job design for croatia airlines.
they fd off afco and then croatians came up with something unimaginabley worse.
i rekon that the riva will eventually be redona all over again, this time with stone from brac and cafes should have their own original look , but i do agree that those large sunshades with advertising all over them shouldnt be allowed anywhere , not just the riva.

At the risk of being vilified for life and banned from the forum, I don't think it's that bad.

Yes, Brac stone would have been preferable. Yes, I'd prefer the street cafes kept their own identity and different colour awnings but I don't think it will look bad once the framework is covered. Benches should be just comfortable enough for a brief perch but not comfortable enough to spend the night on. To complete the job in 8 months is remarkable - believe me. Urgent civil engineering jobs take years in Italy....the autostrada from Adriatic to the Med has been worked on for the last 20 years and there's still way to go! Stop your moaning and get optimistic!

I was talking to my Grandad and he told me how he'd read in Slobodna Dalmacija that if you want to sit on those benches you can't be over a certain weight! Or you'll be asked to move?! :o :D O the joy...

It was actually the ugly new chairs that every cafe has been ordered to buy (at 3x the price of buying something similar from a shop) that the paper said there was an 85 kilo weight limit on. I don't think they're that fragile but they certainly are ugly, though not as ugly as the new white plastic tables that all the cafe's have had to buy.

The chairs are certainly wrong though - the back has vertical rods and so the horizontal velcro on the seat cushion cant get hold, so they're permanently hanging off! Which is no bad thing as they're nylon and make you sweat hideously within a few seconds of sitting on them on a warm day, drinking white coffee that's gone from 10 kuna to 15 kuna at every cafe.

The best description of the Riva I've heard from a Croat so far is that it's like making a grandmother wear a mini-skirt! Perfect.

What the hell??? 85 kilos limit?? I am more than that, so that means I couldn't sit on a chair in a cafe? that's only 13.5 stone, a LOT of people will be significantly heavier than that.
