When we are in Croatia (2 months in the summer), we don't look at Croatian TV, partly cos we don't understand it and partly cos since they made it digital we cannot pick it up. Are we supposed to pay a viewing fee to HTV or can we opt out? Are we likely to get a fine if we don't pay?
Thanks.

If you have a tv in your house or a radio in your car or your house , then yes you have to pay the licence. Regardless of how long you are there.
Just like in England and as far as i know in every other country.
As for the risk,of not having the licence its just like any law that you break, you either get caught or you dont.

Remove the TV from the house, that will solve the problem. At the same have the electricity supply disconnected to avoid paying HEP usage bills. On this subject does anyone know of other good money saving wheezes ? Sink a bunar and get free water via a pump.

How much is a licence and where do you go to get one? I don't think that many countries do have TV licences, television is often funded entirely by advertising. I certainly didn't know you need a radio licence, those were scrapped in UK in 1971.

They came once to me and I paid even though the television wasn't working. They never came again and we hardly watched it. Last year I received a massive fine plus legal fees and interest. I not only had to pay but to prove I didn't want it I had to remove it and any radio/cd player from the building. I received a form which had to be signed and notarised. The actual licence fee is quite cheap but it's only for the season not all year.

Yes,we have a holiday home. In total we paid around £800.00. The television only worked for about two years and then we could only get news programmes in English. You have to have the licence even if you only have a radio and they can come in and search your property looking for them.

I don't think I want to wait for a knock on the door if there is a risk of getting big fines. Is it possible to buy a licence at the post office?

I too pay for non resident, home owner tv licence i.e. 3 months per annum. I chose to pay July, August and September. 80.00 HRK per month. Radiotelevisija Zagreb collects from my bank account and sends receipted bills to house.
