We have flights booked to travel to Dubrovnik for a week in September. Looking for advice on whether to stay just outside old town or further down coast in resort, eg Cavtat. Is Dubrovnik town way too busy and very expensive? If you had choice would you stay in town or resort?

Cavtat every time. If you want it very quiet, try Mali Zaton.

Depends if you like crowds or want peace. If crowds and some noise are okay for you, then stay in town. Also check how many cruise ships are docking during your dates to see help make your mind up. www.portdubrovnik.hr/girica1.php

If you are hiring a car and want to explore the area, it is better to be further out. If you want to explore the Peljesac peninsula and visit Ston and the vineyards, then Slano is a good place to base yourself. There are good choice of apartments, private villas and 2 hotels in Slano. Dubrovnik is small and is doable in 3 days.
