Would you have time to give me any suggestions how I might locate relatives of mine in Croatia, likely Korcula? Surname is Curach.

Your surname, in Croatia, would be "Curac" with a small accent on the last c - it would be pronouned the same as Curach. We've looked up your surname in the Croatian online telephone directory (http://www.tportal.hr/imenik/default.asp?lang=1) for Korcula, and there about 60 people with that surname still living on the island. The majority of them are in a village called Zrnovo, which is near Korcula town. Here's a bit more about Zrnovo: www.korcula-croatia.com/zrnovo-korcula-croatia.htm. There's another website about Zrnovo from the primary school there: skole.htnet.hr/os-zrnovo-002/skola/ (in Croatian only). They also have an email address (os-zrnovo-002@skole.htnet.hr), I am sure that one of the teachers would speak English. You can look up your surname in the telephone directory - Korcula is in "020 - Dubrovnik and Neretva". The telephone directory only gives phone numbers. However, we also found four email addresses of people with the surname Curac on the Korcula - they rent out holiday apartments! Try typing in curac .hr in Google and you can see yourself. (.hr is the domain for Croatia) For starters, you could try emailing these people directory to see what happens - I am sure that they know some English as their apartment rental webpages are in English. If you get stuck, let us know and we can try writing in Croatian. You might also like to check out the Croatian geneaology website www.croatia-in-english.com. Hope this helps! Happy New Year!

I see this thread is a bit old, but I am in the same position, travelling in 2013 to Zrnovo looking to find relatives Curac and Matulovic. I will check all of the advice above. A family member told me that there is an ancient village well on Korcula related to the Curac family. Anyone with knowledge of that?

There's an excellent Croatian genealogy website run by Robert Jerin at www.croatia-in-english.com/ which is a very good starting point. Robert also runs a Facebook group - Croatian Heritage and Genealogy: www.facebook.com/groups/croatianheritageandgenealogy/ (it is a closed Facebook group, so you have to request to join). The group has lots of info on how to find out more on Croatian family/heritage/relatives.

I see this thread goes back awhile. I am a curach and live in Australia. My grandparents originated from Dubrovnik in Croatia. I'm second generation Australian. Find it fascinating... my grandmother came out on boat after second world war. I would love to find more of us, I know there are only 6 Curach's in Australia.
