This thread again... lol
The Englishman in Zagreb (EMIZ) brought me to this forum, 7 or 8 years ago.

I love this thread for the pure entertainment value. It was groundbreaking in its time because until then everyone seemed to be a Croatia-phile, and it was depressingly true in many of the criticisms. Just wish Emiz/ Capio still posted but I guess he's got a life to get on with!

He seemed go all quiet when Middlesboro got relegated.
Who is the new EMIZ? Now that "guest" has returned under a new MonikHer.

I find the title deeply offending... Anna, would you kindly change the all-caps title to something bearable to look at? .

Better? You're right, all-caps is shouting, which is very poor form...
The title technically remains on each individual post, though - I'd have to individually change that.

"But that does not mean I am slave! And that is exectly how Brits and Americans see us."
Quite the generalization. And I suppose all Germans, Austrians, Italians, Irish, Serbs, Bosnians etc etc are perfect guests? Friends, family and I treat the homeowners we stay with with the utmost respect and have developed a number of long lasting friendships over the years. Perhaps next time I can stay at your place and we can sip Slivovitz and I can try to change your opinion a bit?
"I was very frustrated working in tourism ". hereticst, welcome to the world of the hospitality business. I worked retail for years and you meet some really great people and plenty of horribly rude ones as well. They are certainly not only American and British.
Lastly I will say the headline CROATIA IS A HORRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE is quite the eye catcher. I can only imagine what some of the earlier posts and commentary were about.

The early were about potholes, bureaucracy, crazy drivers, poor quality consumer goods, high taxation and various standard responses which mainly feel into three categories:- 1. Leave, if you don't like 2. Every country is bad like this (sometimes aligned with specific remarks against Britain) 3. Croatia is a new country
That was in 2004. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!

Lastly I will say the headline CROATIA IS A HORRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE is quite the eye catcher. I can only imagine what some of the earlier posts and commentary were about. I'm British, have a business in Croatia and the UK and often feel like a slave to it. Ok, no one is whipping you (at least we hope not during work hours) and I gather you don't get paid a slaves wage for your efforts right? But, as any business owner knows you can feel like a slave to your business as you have your own earnings tied up in the business (unless you took out a loan and now slave to the bank or your investor), and I know I sometimes wonder what it's all about the unpaid over time, irate customers and problems that arise from owning a business. This is what I mean by "slave". I didn't quite understand your second paragraph as it sounded like you stayed at other peoples homes and treated home owners well, when I thought you rented places out to tourists and not to happy with Brits or Americans? Sadly you can't stay with me as I am not in the tourist rental business (and I am but a humble slave to my kids, the dog and the wife), nor am I situated on the Croatian Coast, but rather the center of Croatia (strike that, I mean the world) known as Zagreb. After 5+ years in Croatia I would never say "I hate it", just watch it unfold with amusement the changes taking place.

Mambo was a bit like a poor man's Emiz ;D, seriously though Emiz was a unique creature in this virtual world, no one before or since had that ferocity about him. The older ones remember the nightly phone calls he supposedly recieved and the calls to meet up at empty parking lots somewhere in the city etc. Some bizarre stuff really, but at the same time very entertaining to read.

I'm sure it wouldn't be much of a problem to go and replace all the titles in all the posts in this smallish thread. While you're at it, a few stylistic interventions in the content would do handy, starting with the new title "I'm probably wrong, but Croatia is possibly not the best place to live?" ;D Stylistic interventions aside, I do remember this thread from years before I joined this forum. It was very entertaining and informative. .

Ha! Not much to talk about these days, since the wild west days have come and gone. Soon we'll be one big happy EU family member wishing for the ol days of yesteryear, when we could bribe our way to success.

I smiled when I saw this thread still going......
Hello everyone.
Well I have been putting off telling the final story. But as for me I lost everything there so I believe anyways. Property, all of my stuff for the shop is being given away tp people in the village and my Land Rover sits on the island. 6 figures poorer I can do little about it. I had buyers for the property but it came down to I was staying in a friends garage apartment which was to have been temporary until I sold......after 2 years I had to move and came down to sending money to a lawyer in Croatia or buying something here so I was not sleeping in my Range Rover. So I bought property inside of Olympic National Forest and an RV for the time being closest neighbor is 5km.......it is gorgeous here a small lake below me and the biggest trees on earth........after Croatia I have no big interest in people, lol.
Coming home with no car or home and needing to start life again since I had sold all of it to go over there, I just did not have the money to continue to fight.......so I had to give up when properties came back with problems and not the money to continue there.
So in the end I would never say it is a horrible place to live........although with really never being able to relax and always worried for almost 2 years, I am not sure I really know what life could be like..........but it looking back was memorable but nothing I would tell someone else to do unless you have mucho money.
If anyone is interested....
I have my 1967 Series 2a land rover sitting on Hvar I shipped from the states...... Have invested almost $13,000......there are extra tubs of all kinds of parts, a full tool box and 2 sets of tire chains......axles.....new lockouts....new fuel and water pump.....seals.....just a bunch of stuff. It is LHD and a USA title in the vehicle. It even has a Kodiak Canadian LR heater that keeps it warm and it worth a mint itself........also original leather bound repair books that were originally in an English Library.....both axles were fully rebuilt including diffs and axle housings were put on amachine to make perfectly true at $1500...........I would be embarrased to tell what I paid for those 2 books, oh well.....lol....... I believe with some work it might pass for oldtimer or if someone has a farm it would be great.......for 46 years old it is in great shape. It need a cylinder head, easy for someone feom the UK to get and a bearing in the bell housing. But it does run and drive fine. The person watching it drives it once inawhile but is not a LR guy and I want it to be used and enjoyed not sitting. So any interested party I will make you the deal of a lifetime..... I paid $6000 for it before any work NAS series are the highest value resales and did a ton of work which I can explain to someone...... so anyone interested please drop me a note at bebewanna@hotmail.com....
I saw my last post in here got comments .....let's face it not many people are prepared for the onslaught of nonsense they throw at you there a few years ago. Had I been able to stay I do believe my business would have been fine. I do regret turning those businessmen down to open a factory and me deign the stuff. At that point I was so freaked out I made little good choices. When you are 100% stressed and scared nothing good is going to happen because you just cannot make the right choices in fear. I thought I had made friends but my many requests for help went ignored there after I left and I had to laugh the guy I had planned to open a cafe bar with had I sold, I could not get him to walk into the Acct. Office and help me. But recently he commented we should do something together.....LMAO.....I liked that.
I think if you have mucho money Croatia would be a wonderful place to live........ so you can just write a check everytime some stupidity comes your way. I cannot say for sure that I know that because all except my first 2 months it was nothing but a nightmare and a big stress....... more than anything I came at a bad time.
I hope everyone is doing well and that things have calmed some for people......
In the end I wish I had never seen the place........but in that same sentence had it been workable I might feel differently.
Peace folks......

I probably wouldn't trust your business judgement, but still I like your attitude and how you always land on your feet. Olympic National Forest must be beautiful. Good luck and enjoy your solitude. .

Sorry to hear about the final outcome bebewana, like justapixel, I do like your optimism and readiness to take a chance. Sadly, Dalmatia is not the place to do it. Here's wishing you all the best in your new phase.
