Does anybody know of a superstition relating to the giving of flowers? I read about this somewhere...
I want to buy a bunch of flowers for a friends mother who will be hosting me for a while, but, being a typical male, this is not something that comes naturally to me. To make things worse, I hear that it is bad luck to give someone a bunch containing an even number of flowers, and that there should be an odd number. But not 13, as this is also bad luck...
She is also not very well at the moment, and I don't want to freak the lady out by turning up holding some omen of death...
You guys got any ideas? ...or should I just stick to a box of chocs? or a bottle of wine (that way I can drink some too!)

It's true, even number of fowers is usually used for funural arrangements. So, the number should be odd. You cannot miss with roses, or some nice bouquet in vivid colors. It does not to have anything too big, 5-7 roses nicely arranged would do, for example. Croatian women like getting flowers and she would probably prefer it to a bottle of wine. Box of chocs is always a good combination with flowers.
Make sure to avoid Chrysanthemum (krizantema in Croatian, ballon shaped flower, white or yelow). It is associated with funerals and All Saints Day in whatever number it comes.

Great! thanks for the tips! I'm thinking of a bunch of mixed roses (red, pink and white) - all red may seem a bit too romantic... Plus roses are the national flower of merry England, so I have an excuse if she thinks I'm coming onto her with roses!
It all kinda depends on what's available when I get there... now I just need to find a decent daisy-shop in Zagreb...

That shouldn't be a problem. For example, you can buy them on Cvjetni Trg in the centre of ZG, or even on the main square.

I have to say "propuh" is one of my favorites. I remember once the kid (maybe 6 years old) next door came over and was complaining about not feeling well and then he memtioned that the "propuh got him". I burst out laughing. Hearing it from the baba's is one thing but from a kid it just sounded crazy. Everyone thought I was terrible "for laughing at the sick kid".

heres another 2 croatian superstitions. pretty interesting. if someone steps over you ....while you are say..lying on the floor watching tv ....you wont grow any more unless that person walks back over you. and the other one is ..that its no good to give people knives as a gift. and if you happen to get sa knife /s as a gift..then give that person who gave you the knife a symbolic gift ...anything. in return for the knife. it is believed that if a person gives you a knife..then they are wishing you bad luck ...or something bad. and by givng them something in return ...then the bad luck wont be effective.

What I've heard about giving knives as gifts is this. Giving a knife will cut the friendship in half. By giving something back (even a penny) the knife has been paid for.

A friend of mine went to the doctors with an eye infection. The doctor put it down to “propuh “and asked if he keeps windows and doors open on opposite sides of the house. My friend replied „I sometimes ride a bike with my eyes open and I went jogging yesterday and opened my eyes to see where I was going". The doctor took offence and told him to find a new doctor

propuh? that's just a strong breeze right? I must admit that they do have some strange ideas towards anything to do with the wind.
