Mac,
Are you in Ireland? I know what you mean about certain areas in Ireland in the north and in Dublin. Some pretty rough neighborhoods. I think you will find that everywhere.

"Irish success story or Greek tradegy"
These were the headlines in an Austrian paper today. Amazingly, it goes on to say what I was just wrting yesterday about Ireland in the Eu etc. The main points being that Ire received €14 billion in the last ten years as well as having low business taxes (can't really comment on the latter properly though) and if it had not been as a result of their EU membership this simply would not have happened. Regarding Greece, it states that while they should have enjoyed the same benefits now they fell to their knees because they were not as strict on keeping their eyes on the budget, did not invest heavily structurally speaking, did not concentrate in education and training nor look after business enterprises. Pretty d**ning to say the least! Just look at their Olympic preparations and you'll see what I mean.
So, now Croatia has another fine example but in this case its one to avoid. ;D

Hercegovina needs to remain with Bosnia. As it was mentioned if Hercegovina is annexed by Croatia then 49% of Bosnia will be joined to Serbia proper. The Serbs have lost all the wars they started but they did manage to retain 49% of Bosnia when they only made up 31% of pre-war population. THAT...is a big problem. They forced out the muslims from the east and north into Bosnian Croatian territory putting a strain on the 19% Croat population. Now you have some 70% of the pre-war population living on 51% of the land (minus the dead and refugees living outside Bosnia). It was only under Tudjman, Susak and Izabegovic that Catholics and Muslims began to fight. We are natural allies because we are the same ethnicity but different religion. During NDH we were at peace, it needs to be that way again if Croatia-Bosnia want their rule to reach the Drina. I can only say pray for another war so we can regain our territory. unlike the previous one...the Bosnian and Croatian armies are armed, trained, and ready. They need cooperation to achieve Hrvatska do Drine. Let the muslimani have control of Bosnia and create a losse federation. In that case the muslimani need to be respected, culturally and religously. While HVO fought to divide Bosnia-Hercegovina, HOS-ovci worked with the muslimani to defend the Homeland against the common serbian enemy and to keep Bosnia united! Please can the person who's implying the serbs are "breeding" so fast in RS also provide statistics on birth rate...or is this just the same kind of false rethorics as used many time in history by bothe serbs and kosova albanians on the kosovo issue....?
I had hoped some people learned smth...if it's only the other side that makes mistakes or does wrong we'll not get any were..
I can only advise everyone to read "Bosnia a short history" by Noel Malcolm ISBN 0-330-41244-2
And yes, personally I also dislike the fact that when bosnian-croat forces almost beat the serbs Dayton was signed. But I'm confident bosnia and Hercegovina will not be endagered in the same way again. BiH army is now set up and trained on NATO standards. Croat defense is also preparing NATO integration.
Regards
