Much publicised at the moment, Greece, pulling in thousands of stray dogs off the street. And I've just watched the opening ceremony on tv. It was buzzing! Croatia has announced that, as of November this year ALL pets will have to be microchipped, at a cost of about 20 quid per animal. To meet EEC standards. (There are no EEC standards like this in the UK, unless you exprort animals). So, what happens to the 10-20 stray cats, not to mention the dogs that chase cars, who hang around every wheelybin. How many wheely bins? Hundreds of thousands! And their aint no R.S.P.C.A. Worrying aint it. I personally feed 19 stray cats every day, in my Croatian back yard. They are wonderful. Fun even. Just animals? I don't think so. The questions need answering, if anyone knows or cares.

That question is for more developed states, croatia has bigger problems and not enough funds. I am sorry, as I love animals, but the mentality of this nation doesn't care about animals. they are mostly being regarded as products of nature who serve man kind in any way (food etc.) Having said that, they're not very upset when they see animal torture images, or stray dogs.Actually, most of them are sorry that the new law (maybe from 5,6 years) prohibits hunters to kill stray dogs. before that, every registered hunter who had a gun, could get out in the street and kill everything in his sight. Many of the real pets who were just outside they're yards were killed. No one was shocked. Actually, they still have right to kill any suspected stray animals if they see them in an open area (like a field, close to forests, where most hunerts go). That is a special problem is rural areas, where you can't easily determine where does the village end and "open, unpopulated areas" start. You think anyone gives a d**n about that? lmao. there was a show on croatian Tv about a year ago, about brutality towards animals. one of the stories covered hunters who were passing by some house in some village on their way to hunt, when they saw about 5,6 puppies if front of the yard, maybe 10 meters away. They killed them all. No one blinked an eye. On the same show, they put a report on dog fights somwhere in dalmatian hills. Althought dog fights are illegal in croatia, owners and organisers of fights were displayed on TV, and they proudly said that they don't give a d**n about law and that no one can touch them. Again, police didn't close down the place, maybe some of the local cops even put bets, wouldn't suprise me at all.
Now, all this long intro for a short finale that is surely going to upset every normal person. I wrote my intro to show how much primitve people of this country care.
ready Als? OK, hang on to your chair.
THE PROBLEM OF STRAY DOGS IN ZAGREB (the capital for those who don't know many things about croatia)
Like every major city, zagreb also has a service that's dealing with with stray dogs. The services' main goal is to catch stray dogs and put them of the street. They do that is a very brutal way (also televised, no one cared) but that's not the point. When the dogs are caught, they are put in detention, cages where they are kept for 30 days. Every person can come there and "adopt" some of them. If, after 30 days, dogs stay there and no one takes them, they are being killed with letal injections. Brutal you think? maybe, but it 's at least painless. Now the grand finale: the geniouses and monsters who work there, inculding their boss, some city offical in charge for that service whose name I forgot thought of the way to make lots of money. Since every lethal injection costs about 300 kuna ( around 40 euros) and is payed by city, it can be a large sum of money in 1 year. So what do they do? they take money from the city for lethal injections, they put the money in their pockets. Ok, but dogs are still getting killed, right? Sure they are, but how? well, by breaking their necks, beating them with bats to death, or sufficating them. Public found out about that recently, you think someone was punished? you think a guy who was running a service lost his job? Those who care and give a d**n are minority of people with no ifluence. Majority doesn't give a
enjoy your life in croatia Als, a beautiful country that has to be still explored. Just don't exlpore 2 much, or you're run back to your country before you know it.

I have just one comment-I sincerely hope that every single person on this planet who tortured or enjoyed torturing and killing animals dies a slow and immensly painful death. When I look at all the human stupidity(wars, discriminations, hypocracy, lies, greed) since the dawn of mankind to this day(and it will definitely go on) my only normal deduction can be that people are THE MOST STUPID and USELESS creatures in the universe as we know it.I know that these words may characterize me as a sort of myzanthrope, but I am really not.I think everyone should come to this conclusion if they are the least bit objective and honest. I wish we had the electric chair here in CRO because my number one crime with that punishment would surely be animal related!!!!!!

Jeez I've had some mad responses to this posting. Makes you wonder what kind of individual visits this website. But we 'know' who these people are. Message boards are full of idiots. Crazy Horse...whoever you are. Grow up... head. You'll see it all in time...One day. Knocking on your door. Beautiful isn't it?

Exactly what was "immature" in my post, and how do you qualify idiotism in posts? Are those the posts you don't agree with, posts you don't understand, or you're just being naughty to people responding? Nuts head? I've tried to post as many facts as I can in my post, and somehow that upset you. People who get upset over such small thngs are usually the ones being nuts. Somehow I feel, since I live here, i know more things than you and I try to be helpful. If I was moving to your country I'd be more than happy to listen to facts and things I am unaware of. Well, in future, I'll try to "avoid" your posts, since trying to be helpful gets me only insults. Later

I'm glad someone raised the very tragic issue of stray cats and dogs in Croatia but am sorry that there are people with immature attitudes and frame of mind who feel they need to contribute. Let them take part in other pursuits and leave this one to those who care. it is said that a country proves how civilised it is by its attitude and treatment of animals. We surely can agree that Croatia unfortunately has barely started to address this issue, let alone resolve it. It is genuinely sickening to witness general public attitude in dealing with the problem, even though there are small steps forward. To my knowledge, there is an animal protection league in Rijeka as well as in Dubrovnik and Korcula. There are not enough vets so animals propagate out of control. That is the main problem, ie neutering instead of culling strays would immensely help reduce their agony. As things stand, Croatia unfortunately projects itself as no better than say Tunisia or any other country where population is poor and uneducated. Can Croatia afford this image knocking on EU door? PS: Aree there any vets interested in helping tackle this problem in Croatia-Dalmatia?

There is a University veterinary clinic in Zagreg, where they neuter cats free of charge. Also, I know a lot of ordinary people in Zagreb, who feed and take care of stray cats on regular basis (thank you Branka, Dubravka, Mrs. Fasin and Boro the Vet!).

Please come to Dubrovnik and see just how awful Croatians(and especially Dalmatian people) are when it come to animals (cats to be precise).there is not a day that passes by that I do not see some poor kitty wondering the streets,no food, no shelter, most of them are sick and wounded.Horrible.I am sad to call myself Croatian when I see how animal-unfriendly Croatian peole can be(of course theere are, thank God,some exceptions to this rule).I like that Americans and Brits have different sensitivity when it comes to this issue.I applaude that,REALLY! And most of you Croatians who treat animals poorly-I only hope you will be treated the same way at some point in your life.SHAME ON YOU.Avoid Dubrovnik at all costs if you love animals and are planning to bring your pet with you to Croatia.

I do believe that cats and dogs breed and multiplay in other countries too , not only in croatia so , what do u think is happening in that other countries ? have u ever heared of huge farms, with like 3000 dogs and 15 000 cats , living happily their lives ? I think not I think that for some gentle souls everything is ok, until they get to hear about it in the meantime , stray cats and dogs are problem everywhere and the danger of sickness and attacks is very big have u ever happened to walk in night and meet a pack of 30-40 dogs ? I had and after that , am happy that somebody have that sad duty to take them off the streets and that poor animals didnt just appeared on the streets mostly they were thrown there and abandoned by somebody who got tired of having a pet and also , some tourist were caught throwing poor animals out of the car and leaving them in country they meant have no law to protect them

Bluemouse that is not true! My daughter had to wait for 3 months(!) in order to be able TO BUY(!!!!!) a kitten in England from a petshop because there were none - demand outweighs the number of newly born kittens. Here there are NO strays to be picked up on the streets and you have to pay to get a cat - (now the most popular pet on this island to take it home with you. Don't talk about what you don't know boy. Of course animals propagate if their breeding is not kept under control, the point is in rural environment it is a matter of survival and nature controls it. in urban environment they depend on us humans and we have to either take care of their population, or control it by spaying tomcats and neutering pussicats. Same with dogs of course.Still looking for a vet volunteer from england>>>
