Boris, I also write lyrics, and was on the Sanja show last year, with Boris Novkoviæ! ;D However I don't have a composer And I have always wondered why Croats seem to think that all Brits are from London and all French are from Paris, but don't think all Germans are from Berlin or Portuguese from Lisbon etc. By the way I love the album London 0 Hull 4, and all the Housemartins and Beautiful South songs There is a song on that album that takes the piss out of rich, privileged Londoners!!!

i wouldn't put any money on a bet that over 25% of the British population know that Split is a place name and I would put any money on a sizeable portion knowing that Zagreb is the capital. A Place in the Sun, the buying property abroad magazine was running a feature on Dubrovnik in the summer. They sent me an email about it. In the email they refered to Dubrovnik as the capital! Even they don't know for Zagreb. You don't say!! I thought Brits were superior in their education and knowledge of the world! not atall! - we are more like a mini american in someways as people tend to think we are the centre of the world so there's no need to learn about any where else, and also to add everyone should just speak english! hahaha ;D

This does sum up the vast majority of English people - they neither know about or have any real interest in Croatia. If "Why many Croats do not like English" was because English people would struggle to find Croatia on a map and don't care a jot about the place, then at least they could have some (minor) reason! I have contact with a lot of foreign people from different sides of the world and lot's of them dislike Engish people, not because English cannot find their countries on the map. It's because English, in general, when talking to foreigns or talking about their country... ect. come across as very polite, understanding, interested... BUT in the same time as 'know it all' type of people who look down the nose on everything and everybody ( except Americans ) even when they are unaware of that. They come across as a fake and there is something more about attitude which I cannot explain. ( hope this statement nobody will take personally as we are generalising here ) Where are you from?

Slatkica, if you mean me, I'm from England, one of the very few English people that actually live in Split full time, and for me the experience has on the whole been very good. The Croatians I deal with have all been helpful and friendly, efficient and well priced, be it builders, carpenters, car mechanics, cafe owners etc. The only comments I've had negatively about England have been about John Major's government, who some of my Croatian friends feel was very against them in the war, and this feeling of unhappiness with the British government does seem to have influenced how some Croatians now view the English.
There are quite a few Irish and Australian people living in Split, and these people are constantly believed to be English by the locals, which does give the impression there are loads of us here. Fortunately, there aren't!
