Dear Croats,
We are trying to use the present football competition to highlight local food to our school group. We are finding it difficult to establish if any particular dish is a speciality of your country. Can you please advice?
Thanks for your help.

My god...(haval bogu) I will be drummed out of the country, answering this. But, and I have been eating Croatian food for 4 months. What a imagine is standard, home grown food.....It's bland man. Bland beyond belief. Though eatable. Good. OKay. But everything is sweet(ish). Juha, a soup, made with veg, meat, strained...and then the hot meat...(usually boiled beef), served with the...blubber. Then they do a pretty fair BBQ with veal, drenched in oilive oil. And cakes....walnut cakes...sweat...sickly. Okay. The coffee comes along just in time (on top of gallons of home grown vino), which is good. Red and black. White not so common. And some great brandies. Some 'knock you down' brandies. Some of the eating sessions last 7 hours. And always end with persut...dried leg of pig. Good. And Gurda cheese, or some other brand. You have to pace yourself. And make sure you have a lift home. My god. I would KILL for a curry!!!!!!! And Heinz beans. I have not found them in the country. The food. It's okay, but, bland.....I dream of vindaloos!!!! They're better than sexy dreams. I am floating, drowning in Madrass and Vindalooos.....Gasp! They have supermarkets, end to end here. ALL selling the same...THE SAME stuff! I am talking dozens of supermarkets. Hypermarkets. It's crazy. And watch out for the huge dried fish, cooked with beetroot. Wow. I have considered ordering a take-away, from England, from IDIA even. It would be worth it!!!!!

I find report by Alsdoubles a bit unfair. Food will depend on the region of Croatia you are in. More fish and shellfood in the coast areas and more casarole type dishes inland. There is much much more to Croatian food then what Marting wrote. For start try this link www.visit-croatia.co.uk/cuisine/Alsdoubles for your info - check spelling: hvala bogu prsut Gauda cheese

Coastal is dead right. Spelling. I never check spelling. I'm on HT Net, the monopoly service which is mighty expensive. Who cares about spelling. This is not a thesis. Just idle banter. Croatian food is okay....ish. They also do a lot with fish. Boiled, with glazed over eyes. Octopus, cuttlefish....cray fish etc. Fish soup, with rice......Phew.

Alsdoubles,
The English have no idea about cuisine. I have been in England for several months now and the crap you guys eat is not fit for human consumption. Tv dinners in the microwave? Curry? Steak and kidney? Bangers and mash?
The great English contributions to world cuisine! ;D

Sanja don't worry. The English know nothing about food.
All European civilization have their own excellent contributions to world food - but England has nothing.
Ajme, I can't believe the they eat here in London. You can't eat the meat because it has mad cow disease. And this chump is complaining about beautiful fresh fish caught out of our jadransko more and beautiful grain fed meat - none of this genetic !
I have travelled all over the world and Croatian food is the best in the world!. English food - the WORST!
Which country do you go into a restaurant and order "bangers and mash"? isuse boze!

Why do you Croats always have to be so defensive?
We English know our food is rubbish and we laugh about it.
Try to learn to laugh at yourself sometimes ................ you'll live longer!

Hi, all. I am currently dating someone from Croatia and would like to make a great meal for him. I live in the U.S. so I will be purchasing ingredients here. Any suggestions? How about wine?

Hey, we are not all ignorant about food! I am British and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Croatia (Istria) ;D. And I thought the food was great! I tried lots of Croatian food - prsut, manestra, pasta with truffles, cheeses, palacinke, fish dishes...the salads were all fresh and very tasty, the ice cream was great. The wine too - I got through quite a lot of Malvazija, it was excellent. And I have never had such great roast potatoes! But in Britain we don't all eat curry and ready-meals! We may not have the most interesting recipes but there are lots of good fresh ingredients available, and most people do cook! I certainly do and it's never 'bangers and mash' ;D I had a great holiday in Croatia and will recommend it to everyone - including the food. I have only one complaint - that I tried to get a Croatian recipe book before I left and couldn't find one! Carla

As a Canadian I think I can try to be unbiased here..... Croatian food here in Split is great, but there is too little variety. The seafood is fantastic, grilled and not smothered in sauces, but plain and wholesome, just oil and spices. I like the Dalmatian smoked ham. Wines are a little tannic, but not bad. Great lamb BBQs on the roadside. I LOVE the black rissotto! Pizza, good. Salads, good. But all the restaurants seem to have the same things, and you get tired of it fast. I also just came back from a three week stay in England, and the food isn't bad there at all!!! I'm into comfort food, and Shepherd's Pie suits me just fine! Bangars and mash, puddings, Cornish pasties, curries, steak and kidney pie, all great food. I even bought a small recipe book of traditional favourites. But don't forget England (especially London) is very international now. You can find everything from Thai food to Greek. Was that fair enough? Don't want to take sides, you know.....

I agree. I love the food in Croatia. But you do tire of the same dishes over and over in restaurants.
I heard that there is a Mexican restaurant that opened in Split.. Have you gone there?

I went to a Mexican restaurant when I was in Split...although I only went for drinks - I searched everywhere to find a Margarita!! Anyway, I can't remember the name of it, but it wasn't near the Old part of town.
