We have heard that the croation government has closed a large number of croatian d.o.o. Has any body had experiences of this or been affected by this? What is the reasons for this action?

It has been reported that it is intended to close many dormant companies on the grounds that they should not exist for any other purpose than to conduct business. Too many are merely vehicles to avoid VAT and some are held by foreigners who can only own certain categories of land via a d.o.o. I don't know if they've done it yet as, like David Cameron's government, there has been a lot second thoughts and back-tracking. My guess is the situation is a mess but, hopefully, others here are better informed.

The company I opened to buy some land (which fell through decades ago) got closed by the government (or more so the business courts) and then it took about a month for the bank to close the company account. No charge.

oh, and they owed me a little PDV and I them not so little tax, so I think I came out of it better then them. In my case the tax office lost an entire year worth of tax return we sent them which then started the ball rolling with Fina and then the business courts.
So, anyone with actual properties, houses etc. really need to check whats going on. You can find out the info online by checking on the name of your d.o.o.

I have also had a company closed. It was dormant, without any land or property on it's books and had not filed a tax /annual return in a couple of years. I did not receive any notification, I read about it happening on this website and used the link to check out the company and it was listed as closed.
Great bargain, I'd been watching the chat here about the costs of closing a company and the time it takes so it really suited me. I only hope that it won't affect me in the future once they join Europe. Wonder will there be a list of defaulted company directors?

I don't think so, as a domestic company isn't really an EU company, besides they can't even catch "real" criminals from one EU country to the next. And from what I can tell you can just go and open another company in HR anyway. I know the HR government policy of just closing a company without notification won't stand up in EU law once they join.
