As if Sanader wasn't enough, as if Čehok wasn't enough, not to mention Čačić... today, Milan Bandić is behind bars charged with corruption and held in order to stop him getting at witnesses.
Speechless.

Speechless. Yep, just heard the word! But really, is this really "news"? I mean, heard many a whisper about going on's with Mr B. & stuff involving special city deals with members of his own family members etc. for years. Sure, he put in nice water fountains out front of the main library and major road leading into Zagreb from the airport, built Budek up to what it is today and a few other "nice" projects, but there does seem to be a bit of favoritism it seams with his immediate family members getting certain contracts. But, only time will tell if anything comes of it.

Seems to be a lot of support for him through Facebook etc. saying that he did too many good things for Zagreb & the people of Zagreb, so "of course", they had to stop him... Riiiiiiiiiight...
I was wondering "when" they'd get him...

I was wondering "when" they'd get him... Well, I would have to say that he is liked by many in Zagreb, and he did do a lot of things, even if slightly misguided on some projects. Compare him with some other mayors of the other cities in Croatia and he did a lot. He has been the mayor for quite some time now. Tried to get in with one of the parties and they pretty much tossed him out. So, seems he doesn't have all that many friends in the halls of the Parliament. It could also be a smoke screen for the case in Germany with the former head of the Croatian secret service? I don't dispute that he might of had his fingers in the cooky jar, but then what Croatian politician doesn't? They all seem to prosper greatly once they get in power.

Bandić has strong support among non-urban and less educated citizens of Zagreb who believe that all positive things in Zagreb happen because of him, while the fact is they happen in spite of him. With yearly budget of 7 billion kuna it would be hard not to achieve a good thing or two. Basically everything he does is PR and political spin, he's a true master of populism. Think of him as an anti-Milanović. Because he's ever present in media, the masses think of him as a "hard worker" who gets thing done. He does get things done, but most of the solutions do not serve public, but help the group of his close friends get richer. That being said, the current process actually is primarily political, initiated by Milanović to gain political points. That's not good and may cause lots of problems. The point is - everything Milanović has ever tried achieving always failed. .

I continue seeing lots of support for him on FB etc. but no, he didn't do all these things and no, he didn't do them "for free". As you say, with such a budget for ZG, it would be hard not to get anything done
