it baffles me why Croatia doesn't have a payable extended tourist visa of 6 and 12 months. Xenophobia. They're coming to take our jobs, they're coming to take our women, they believe in the wrong god..... same as anywhere else I guess.

Like the reaction to the american troops in England during WW11? Three problems: they are over paid, over sexed and over here!

Funnily enough I was in both Eire and N. Ireland last week. I'm not sure how much you know about what's going on there but its quite easy to see why Eire hasn't needed to worry about attracting too many immigrants (beautiful though it is).

A friend of mine who lives in the republic told me that young people are leaving in large numbers. Leaving for where ? what is the country of choice now? Everyone is going to the UK, mostly England, except Croats who cannot work there without a near-impossible-to-get visa.

I know Rib answered for general emigration, but for Irish emigration (not immigrants leaving but born and bred Irish people), they mostly go to the UK, or to the old EU or Australia with the UK taking more than the rest of the EU countries combined.
It makes sense. They don't always want to go somewhere new, but if there's no work at home then you move. So, you choose somewhere close by that has work, speaks the same language and will let you in.
