Obama said recently that he wants the UK to stay in the EU, and when Greece was on the brink of falling out of the euro, he personally made phone calls to appeal to both sides to find agreement and enable Greece to stay. Are you sure the USA fears the EU?

No, I reckon the USA wants a world ally and a unified democratic EU is about the best of the rest to have on your side. However, if the EU ever got their industrial and commercial knickers untwisted then it would rival or exceed the monetary muscle enjoyed by the US, this is what I believe drives the US foreign policy as regards the EU, make it strong - but not too strong. Their attempts to cobble together a commercial Americas union with Canada and Mexico (ye gods!) can be seen as evidence of a desperation to remain the big kid on the block. The fact that it's falling apart for the same reasons as EU federalism is failing is an intriguing point, no?

Ribs - I thought Croatia was down to join Schengen on July 1, 2015. But if it did, I certainly missed it. And if you are correct, well, I missed that too kesterj I guess that's another squillion Euros not coming due to the fines for not getting the borders up to EU standards. Is that a fineable offence? I would imagine Croatia misses out on more squillions because its administration is incapable of doing the paper work for EU tenders. kes

The chamber of commerce are always running seminars on how to apply for EU funds.
I get notifications for everything! God forbid that they could work out a sectoral approach to their mailshots. Apparently hairdressers need to be kept informed about changes in forestry policy.
