Hi!
I wonder if someone can help me out with some info. I'm a 41-year-old Mexican citizen, living in Mexico; my great grandfather was born in Rijeka, Croatia in 1880—although it was called by its Italian name, Fiume, in those days and it belonged to the Austrian Empire—and emigrated from Trieste to Mexico in 1905. He was technically a British citizen, as his father—born in Trieste, Italy in 1845 to a British immigrant father and a native triestina—was a British citizen; his mother was Italian, also from Trieste.
I do have an original birth certificate of my great grandfather from the British Consulate in Trieste issued in 1907 for some reason; perhaps he needed it for some legal procedure in Mexico and had it sent from Trieste to Mexico, which is why I have it. Anyway, in that document it is stated that he was born in Fiume, Austria. My question is: would I be able to use that to obtain Croatian citizenship in view that my great grandfather was born in Croatian territory? If so, what steps would you recommend that I take to accomplish this?
Thank you!

Hi Everyone It has been awhile since I last was on here. I am still currently waiting to hear the outcome of my application I applied in May of 2018 (Croatian Consulate Melbourne, Australia) and was informed in July of 2019 that my application was in the final stages of processing. I am hoping that it will be fully processed by next year.
For those wanting to apply through grandparents I made an appointment at the Croatian Consulate in my state to do the test. The following are the documents that I had. -Birth certificates mine, parents and grandparents (translated in Croatian) -CV translated in Croatian =Describing the lineage where my grandparents were born when they immigrated. =My reasons for wanting to be a Croatian Citizen which included my love of the country and my family over there etc. = Proof of taking part in a Croatian community. This can be a club etc. This is the part where I had difficulty so I wrote about the large Croatian community I grow up in. -Grandparents Croatian identity cards. I hope this is helpful if you look up the Croatian consulate where you live it will have information on what is required. It can be a long process. I hoping to have it soon. Does anyone have any advice on how long the processing takes? and has anyone on here since gotten their citizenships?
