I really don't think you will have a problem....You may get a few curious glances at the most. I know I met a few Africans who attend university in Croatia and love it. It's quite charming to hear them speak Croatian I think you will be just fine and hope you enjoy your trip.

Yes, I agree...you might get some curious glances, but no one will bother you. I just recently visited Croatia with a friend of mine who is Indian, and she got some glances here and there, but nothing more.

There is a number of doctors from Africa, who studied at CRO unis. They all married local ladies, have children and are well accepted.

Last week whilst in Croatia we went to visit an old friend of my husbond who returned to Croatia (Zadar region) during the war. His wife is a Jamacian doctor who actually joined the Croatian army and is now happily living in a small rural communtiy. They have two sons born in Jamaca & the USA, all the family are happy & succsessful and wouldn't dream of leaving. I'm sure that you are unlikely to have any problems. Enjoy your trip.

It's true what most people said, you'll only get maybe "looks", but not in a negative way. You see, there aren't just many black people here and people get surprised when they see one, but as I said, not from hate. There are some neo nazi groups in Zagreb, usually groups from 10-20 young people, who attack forregners (not only blacks). I am surprised that police didn't do anything serious to stop them, but after few attacks recently on some diplomats, police finally decided they have to do smth about it, so I haven't heard of any attacks in last year or so. IF you're going to some other parts of Croatia, you won't have any problems at all.

I know one Asian friend who was verbally abused here, but generally the 'looks' are curious as people mentioned.

Some of the big names in Croatian basketball and football are blacks or Brazilian, so if you want them out Bruno then you need to start at home. If you think you have a foreign problem, then maybe it's time all 4.5 million Croatians come home. They far out way the number of other races of foreigners (by the millions) who actually live and work in Croatia.
All you hear is government and media hype about foreigners, whereas the numbers of actual foreigners in Croatia is very small (I'm not talking about foreign tourists coming for a holiday and propping the Croatian economy up to help finance the benefits to 350,000 Croatians out of a job due to red tape, high taxes and an unfriendly business environment).

Ignore the post from Bruno, hes just signed in as a guest and does not reflect typical Croatian attitude. I thought Bruno was gay? So much for Bruno trying to be a racist.

And now people wonder why I think this is a backward society....
Croatia is like a beautiful stupid woman......... good to look at but impossible to hold a conversation with, or even RESPECT, you're better to have a one night stand and then lose her number. fast
Jennifer, if you have no problem in dealing with these stares, because they really do stare at you and point, and also make comments as you walk by you will be ok. My source: asian friend who came to visit me
Edit: Removed quote

Come on, how many of you were betting that "Bruno" was actually not even in Croatia? I certainly did when I saw his post, looked up the IP address and...lo and behold, he's actually in Canada. (That's not to say he can't be Croatian, but if (IF) he is I'd bet it's some second/third generation kid that barely knows his elbow from his...bottom.)
If this kind of message appears, could I please politely ask people not to respond? This is obvious troll behaviour, deliberately trying to provoke and upset. More to the point, this is a thread from August/September 2004... Just don't give them the satisfaction.
That's just a polite request, people can obviously do what they want, but when the bad post gets removed there ends up being a bunch of messages badly disjointed from the original set.
Thanks.

Don't think you will have a problem. Just smile and keep walking if you do. They are just curious because you are a stranger. They just don't know who you are. Wouldn't matter what color you are.
What part of Croatia are you planning on going to?
If we don't hear from you, please come and enjoy yourself. It's really beautiful here.
