I am being advised to think about Opatija as a good place to live, at least semi-permanently. I've never been there but, as a starter, can people who know this place give me a run down as to the usual considerations as a place of residence (prices, traffic, facilities etc...)
Much obliged.

Do the people who advised you like or dislike you?

I live in Veprinac, which is just outside of Opatija and greatly enjoy living here. But I guess it all depends on what you are looking for/want.
I would, however, recommend perhaps finding somewhere just outside of Opatija itself - because it can get quite crowded in the summer, traffic jams etc.

Opatija's nice for a holiday, or for sightseeing, but living? I've stayed there in July and March, one was dead and soulless, the other was buzzing.

OK folks, I get the message. I feel the same abut Porec, Pula etc.. Let me turn the question on it's head. My first option is in beautiful Medjimurje but I'd like to investigate a coastal location, quiet and out of town but with a big town within an hour's drive (for the facilities and cultural stuff).
Suggestions?

It's a tricky request. North or South? Maybe somewhere around Trogir and Split. How about the island Krk? Very busy in the summer, however there are quite a lot of smaller villages there which remain quiet. Rijeka is less than an hour away. Anywhere in Istria is close to the coast and to Rijeka. I'm not sure how cultural Rijeka is though. Keep posting the names of towns that interest you and I'm sure you'll get all the comments you need to make a decision. Good Luck

Thanks folks..
There's not much more to it, I don't have hard and fast requirements above those I've said (above). I do need to travel to the UK and Switzerland on a regular basis so I could do without an +8 hour drive every time. Apart from that, a quiet coastal place but with a big town within an hour or so. Krk seems to be a recurring theme.
Keep 'em coming folks....
