IMO, Okucnica is all land around your house, and Vrt is your garden. For example: you have some land in front of your house you use for parking, and some land at the back, which is your garden. Okucnica is all your land, and garden is only the land at the back.

Thanks for the reply Please give more detail as in English I think we would say would say front and back garden. However from what you say my girl is right as I contend that an Okucnice implies a communal land around say a block of flats. A Vrt to me implies exclusive ownership.

Okucnice means literally 'around the house', so it would be like a yard in english, i guess - the word itself says nothing about ownership, but about location. Vrt means garden, can be ornamental or kitchen garden, front or back garden, public or private. Like the word garden in english, it probably says more about cultivation than about ownership.

Thanks my girlfriend has claimed victory, i still think there is a translation issue as I think a yard implies private ownership but I will defer to those that know the language better.
