Hi Everybody, After a fantastic holiday on the West cost of Istria we decided to spend more time in Croatia and buy a property there. We loved the traditionalism and originality of the place and it felt very unspoilt and untouched. However, we don't really know the whole area as we only had a week to explore. We would like something along the cost line with reasonable pricing... (Isn't everybody? ) Could anybody help us decide where would be the best place to buy please? We read that the West cost is a bit overpriced. Where would be a good place on the East cost? We heard that Opatija is beautiful as well Any opinion would be welcomed. Many thanks.

Many thanks. i'm not in property business and have no idea about pricing, but i would never choose opatija for a holiday home. there are far too many hotels there....and nothing much else, in fact. it's nice to visit. that's all. what about islands? cres or losinj? especially on cres i believe you can still find a peaceful place.

Opatija would be one of the more expensive places to buy.

Opatija would be one of the more expensive places to buy. We really liked the East cost around Vrsar and Porec but heard they are getting expensive now... We're looking for somewhere quiet like Vrsar..

...well Rovinj of course but it (gets busy and perhaps pricey), Pula (gets busy, and is more built up, but still relatively cheap), then after that it is mostly smaller villages (then Labin and Rabac which have a different kind of feel to them from Vrsar).
but I'm not an estate agent!

That's brilliant, thank you very much.... In our case everything helps....

just drive around as much as possible, if you want something cheaper you can always go in land as you'll never be more than 20 or 30 mins from the sea.

Look around Labin and inland from there.

I agree, Labin or Rabac on the East Coast is now up and coming. If you are thinking west coast and like Vrsar, you'd also like Funtana which is the next village from Vrsar on the way to Porec. There is a great website www.realestatecroatia.com which features all areas in Croatia. Opatija is very pricey as is Rovinj. Porec is cheaper than Rovinj and Opatija but gets packed in summer, but has a great buzz and is a great investment long term. Try also Fazana which is close to the Brijuni islands. In terms of inland, I love anywhere near Motovun in the mirna valley. Also inland villages close to the Lim Fjord are worth checking out.....But I am biased as I love Istria, apart from the drivers...........

Thank you everybody... It's very helpful.... Keep it coming, everything helps. We'll definitely check out prices around the mentioned locations and try to get some pictures of them if we can... But I guess you have to be there to get the feel of the place.... More excuse for holidays...

www.istra.com for photos of istra in general. A great virtual reality website is www.istra360.com where you can do virtual tours of a lot of the places including porec, groznjan... My favourite website is www.istra.com/porec which has a porec webcam.... great if you want to know the weather before you travel....... Also check out www.easycroatian.com which is a croatian language school which meets up in Porec in October and May. Great to learn the language once you buy and meet other locals....

I live in Istria, but if you ask me..............forget Istria and go South !
If you like Istria for sure you are going to like Korcula or the area north of Trogir. Prices are still much better than in Istria, easy to reach via airplane.
I just was in Korcula and found some beautiful spots around Vela Luka (while Korcula City is more or less the main attraction). The weather is also much better than up North, so to make it short..........make sure you have seen the rest of Croatia before diving into Istria.

Depending on how much you want to spend? Istria is way over priced. .. . just my opinion. . . live here. I have seen other places nice also, that do not cost as much. Go inland. The season for the sea is short. . . you can drive to it when you have to have that fix. . . it all depends on what is important to you. Good luck in your search. . there are many wonderful choices all over the place.
