brightside, you might have forgotten the massive panic in Croatia this time last year when the unfortunate 18 year old sex slave from (they believed Ukraine) died in Mostar. The shockwaves through the "good and great" in Split was sad and funny all at once. In the second half of 2004 6 young females from the southern Russian Republics, 2 from Africa and 1 from (it's believed) Kosovo were all admitted to clinics in Italy and Slovenia having, I hate to put it this way, served their time, in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia. In my own county, the Women's Initiative have had 3 girls under the age of 21 test positive for HIV/AIDS since 2003, all claimed to be practicing safely and had, at most, 3 partners. It's frightening to hear what's reported and even more frightening to imagine what goes unreported. Croam mentions the hilarious situation of repression in the UK, hmm, I've yet to travel to a more sexually repressed country than his homeland (but they were Irish and British Puritanical rejects writing the laws there so quelle surprise?!), what makes it scary is that so much goes unspoken in Croatia. It's a throwback to Ireland of the 60's/70's and from domestic violence to sexual goings on, everything is kept quiet. Then again, you combine zealous religion, former communist zeal and sexual repression, hmm, scary indeed.
At least I'm glad not to be alone in noticing the over representation of the female form in naughty poses :-) Still, I was worried a little when a couple of team mates, one in his late teens and the other late twenties, were discussing blue movies. I was more than a little perturbed when they said some Saturday nights it's normal for a bunch of buddies to sit around and watch RTL's offerings, or go out and rent some DVD's. Now, is it only me, or does this point to that Greek/Turkish influence? A bunch of men/boys sitting around together watching dirty movies, seems a little, well, Robbie WIlliams to me.....but then again, we Irish prefer such things in dark rooms away from the Canon's eyes :-)

Yes, it's the front cover saying "Poznat vam je osjecaj?" ("You know the feeling?") It's blurry and not vivid enough on this webpage, it looks different when you find yourself standing next to a sexual maniac on the bus station, and the massively enlarged picture of that is staring at you as well. It's a whole new perspective. But I wasn't one of those people (from the article) who called the police. At least not because of that billboard. ;D
Irac, true, that case was all over the media, but it slid into oblivion the next week, sad to say. As far as domestic violence goes, there has been some improvement because a few years back, it was a complete taboo whilst today you've got more women speaking up. However, now we've got the government refusing to give funds to the one organization that shelters abused women and children! And Zagreb's mayor is too busy promising tunnels through Medvednica, turning Bundek into Jarun and squandering millions of kunas on the completion of that scarecrow and rupa bez dna of a football stadium in Maksimir, so he can't be bothered to give the measly 200,000 kunas out of the budget so that this organization could continue to exist! Puke all over that.
By the way, I was watching that film "Ljilja forever" on Slovene TV last night and I can't remember the last time I was so depressed over a film. It was too real and utterly sickening. (It's about a 16-year-old girl from Russia who thinks she's found her saviour in a guy who promises her a job and a brighter future in Sweden but instead, she becomes a sex slave...)

Agree totally Brightside, while that wonderful mayor (I do smile thinking of him outrunning the police) is spening money to clean buildings left right and centre, and "prettifying" Zagreb, so much needs to be in place socially. It's a disgrace even in Split where the mayor hosted counterparts from Italy and Greece in a big show off lavish banquet (curiously underreported in local media) and then clamined to have no money left to give assistance to local charities.
I saw a TV drama on Ch4 that was quite the same, it was about 2 Moldovan girls taken in as sex slaves, ending up, as many do, in the UK. It's known that the buses leaving daily for Italy with girls from Kiev (or should I say Ukraine) have many going to work in the sex industry there. In Turkey it's abominable what goes on, cartloads of young women (from the south and poor rural areas) trucked into tourist resorts. I guess it's not a surprise since the main direct route from Uzbekistan is to the UAE.

The geo billboard cover was quite striking, the first time I saw it my neck almost snapped from turning so fast! It was hardly sexual though, unless you're into line drawings of internal and external organs.
Geo has always been very colorful and graphic so it's nothing new really.
If anything, I thought the advertising in Croatia was tame in comparison to the rest of Europe.

Hey! That's not so bad! That's at least twice a week! (and it's quality that counts - not quantity!) But is that with their spouse??

Valiant was very disappointed with life here. He is an Australian Croat who tried to live here but went home after a year or two. He has a point but his statement is an over-simplification and far too general to have much value. Saying all English are cold hearted and aloof is a similar useless phrase.
