The BEST of Croatian food. Phew. Kebab-chi-chi. Boiled beef and carrots. Fair to good barbies......Veggie soups and juha...never bad. Grilled fish......Mmmh. How many pages does this book have I wonder? I eat it...It's okay. The choices in the super/hypermarkets is incredibly limited. And it's EXPENSIVE. Foods food innit. I eat it, and I'm still alive but....I dream of Heinz 57 varieties...and curries...Beautiful currries...I am repeating myself I know. Sorry. My taste buds have gone dormant here. Seriously. I am not joking. hey man, i really dont like whiners... so why dont you get some of your relatives to send you some spices and curry and whatnot from England? just a thought. (and being my rude American self)

I wanted to recommend two restaurants ( konobas) with authentic Dalmatian food and vine: Yesterday I went to a Konoba 'Galerija Ljubic' in Srinjo Kola, Stari Grad, Hvar. This place has a long history, it is full of antics and signs of the family history. the place was a first pharmacy in Hvar, hundreds of years ago.. it was the best Brudet I ever eaten and the ambient is also unique, with live music.. The second konoba is on Brac, in a middle of a vineyard, in Humac Donji, called Konoba Turanj, it is absolutely a must: www.thisiscroatia.com/brac/konoba.htmThey also sell little jars with prepared fish.. the food of old times..

Whilst I don't agree that the food is awful I do think that cheap eating out (decent food) in Croatia is a thing of the past. Having just returned from Dubrovnik and Korcula, Ok tourist spots I know, restaurants are definitely not cheap. I think many newcomers to the country will be suprised given that the tour operators sell the place as very low cost. Also (and I await the onslaught!) I do think that the quality of Croatian wine is somewhat overhyped and you have to spend £7 upwards to get good bottle (eg Posip in the supermarket 800 kunas) which still is probably not as good as a £5 bottle of French. Beer very cheap though!!

Nicola, I agree with you about the wines, with only a few exceptions. The red wines I've tasted here gave me the worst heartburn, they are like vinegar. And the whites are either too strong or too sweet. BUT there are a few I really liked, one white in particular which I'll let you know when my husband gets home! It was light and dry, with a kick.
But as far as the price of restaurants go, I think it's not bad here. When I was in London, I found myself eating out of grocery stores, the restaurants were so expensive, so I don't mind paying 10$ for a steak here. ALTHOUGH the seafood is terribly overpriced in Croatia!

Thanks Shannon - I would be interested in your wine recommendations. We got fearsome hangovers trying to find a good one!

Thanks Shannon - I would be interested in your wine recommendations. We got fearsome hangovers trying to find a good one! Youa re not a wine snob are you. What you say about the wine is total and utter rubbish. Quid a bottle tops, £1.50 for the red. Doro & Moro. If you get a hangover consult a brain spet. You may be ill. Wine is great here. You can't go wrong. And the locals brew red and black wines that are the colour garnet and ruby. Wonderful. Not so great on white mind you. Pearl wine is alkso beautiful. Food, I will not talk about the food. It's okay, but wine, pivo.......glorious. Incidentally for an American lister my daughter did send me two tins of beans over 6 quid postage. She also sent me a Vest beef curry (dried) It was bloody awful, whereas back in the 70's Vesta was pretty good tucker. £7 a botle...wine...blimey you could back a vat here for that kind of money. Bog bog....

Hmmm... Alsdoubles seems to be a bit vitrolic himself, very agressive for a forum where we're all just trying to help each other out, very insulting when we're all trying to make friends.... but to each his own..... I think the pleasures of life such as food and fine wines fall under the category of "in the eye (mouth??) of the beholder". While my husband and I have readily jumped into the cuisine here, we're very glad we brought several boxes of international wines with us... that is, those that made it past the police inspection!!!! Seems like customs officers have a thing for Australian chardonnay and French merlot..... And if your definition of "great food" includes imported tinned beans....well, happy dining and no hard feelings! the dreaded smiley, (need the shades, it's very sunny in Croatia!)

Make friends on a message board. No. Not possible. But when you mention wine and importing in to this country wines, and rubbishing the wine that's here, well, one has to speak does one not. The wine here. Croatian wine is, and I repeat IS, better or as good an any wine in the world. The foods okay too. I like Heinz beans. I have also got down me all kinds of fodder in this country from Octopus to.......er...meats of all kinds. Fish soups...It all went went down okay. Especially with the hosts home grown vineyard wine. Vineyards that streth as far as the eye can see. Handed down through families centuries established. I have not had a hangover in the five months I've been here, and boy, have we knocked back a few VATS. Croatian wine is beyond reproach. Crna wine glows like deep cut rubies and drank pola pola (50/50) with water, well it goes down like blood. That's it. The wine's good. No smileys...hate them.....

You don't think making friends on this message board is possible? ? I have already met and made friends with one couple I met on this board, am currently in email contact with three other couples whom I will meet when they arrive in Split, and had another couple call me on the phone yesterday to arrange a dinner to meet next week. And another girl in Zagreb emailed me, to say if I was ever in her neighbourhood, "let's meet!" And I'd like to meet more people, w'ere turning into a regular community here!!!!! This is a great place to meet other foreigners, and I feel lucky to have this opportunity. In South Korea, we had a similiar board and many friendships were forged that way as well. Hey, we're all friends here!!!!! And keep in mind, you may meet some of the people you insult on this board.....so be nice....... (love those smileys!!!)

Will have to consult my dictionary, which I left back in England. Some strange meaning of the word I wasn't previously aware of, maybe. Lipo...nice? I gave up on nice when Sugar Sugar becamne a UK number one by the (spit) Archies. Realised, I was not of this planet. Croatia is not of this planet either...But the wine is okay. The food? Bland. Taste bud destoying bland. Okay..Havbala bogu...but crushingly BLAND. Groan.

The obivous food is always going to be sarma and juha. If people don't like that have home made bread and jam. Alot of cheezes and al sorts of salami. and what would a party be with out the cakes and slices the way our baba's use to make it.

My mum was feeding me fish and greens, fish on 1000 ways and all types of salad.. I never liked fish when I was kid, and honey, we alsways had a lot of these as my grandfather used to make honey.. But now when I notice the difference between that fish and one from the Saisbury's - I really adore mums food.. And Brudet with Pura? Pasticada with Njoki? Have you guys tried this?

I'm not sure why it's so, but Trogir seems to be better at the seafood than Split. We head out to Trogir now whenever we want grilled calamari (our favourite) or octopus salad (the BEST appetizer in Dalmatia, as far as I can see!) We've tried a few restaurants in Trogir, and have not been disappointed. Marijana is a good one. Last night we had the best mixed fish grill, they really put on a good spread, fixed right in front of you on the open air grill, porgee, scampi, red snapper, really great. Needs better side dishes, though, boiled potatoes just don't seem to cut it!!!! Also, someone mentioned a Mexican restaurant in Split. Anyone know where that is?

As far as Trogir restaurants go, they are good.. all but one..
Boat Restaurant Chelica just on the begining of the Ciovo side, I would never go there again, they charged my sister and her english boyfriend £70 for a little fish plater, they forsed them to take a little starter which they never ordered and charged for it.. poor people were still hungry and had to go to another restaurant after to eat..

Hi Shannon,
I was told that the Mexican restaurant is not "in town" and that it is a little hard to find.........
Perhaps ask someone there....someone has to know where it is. Let me know how it is.
