When in Zagreb, I try to eat where the locals eat! Simple and cheap food. Burek at Dolac market, two restaurants at Branimir market nad as a special treat Maharadja curry house, which is first class (IMHO)!

So, Guest 1, the wise and wonderful, what gives you the right to utter from the scared scripts that....anyone who disagrees with you should 'get the fuc out'? Or are you, an American, allowed this honour, outside of normal protocol and decency. As`are Amercians' in general, allowed to run jack-booted over what most people can see are rules unwritten, that don't need writing down...for most people. The 'food' trail I started, for a laugh, and it's been a laugh, and it's gone HOT, as are all my postings, until someone comes along and tells ME to get the fuc out. Because I have an opinion. Guest one. Your opinion is shallow. Sadly. I deeply regret honouring you with two replies. You will get no more. And yes, I AM English! And to end this bitter entry on a positive note, back to the 'food' theme. Spar are opening up in Croatia. So all is not lost. This 'may' not be in your dictionary. wow, Als, nice way to back out of your bet... "oh, i just wont reply to him... ill just run from my problems and complain about the food in croatia". are you going to honor your bet or not? Also, instead of just reading "get the out" part, read the WHOLE post. it actually contain a message, message being, be constructive in your opinions and be polite, instead of being destructive and rude. p.s. back on topic... i was in Zagreb and i tried some regional food there... not bad. i cant wait to try some more regional Croatian cuisine.

Okay Guest 1. Although I don't understand any of the point, if you ever made a point. Regarding my ORIGINAL post on food. It's all there to be read, somewhere on these boards. I've ate it...I eat it...I ate juha and beef and carrots today....it was okay. It was more than okay. Plus BACON and eggs this morning. Yes, bacon and eggs. It is possible, you English people. And, kebab-chi-chi-later on today...Bergers, to be honest etc.... The basic message I think I had in mind is that, although Croatian food is okay (roadkill), there will be a day soon when the supermarkets are bursting with the foods we (outsiders) are more used to. I would still kill for a genuine curry! If all that adds up to I should get the 'f*ck' out. Then, well I just aint. I live here. I've bought here. I like it here. And I've been here for seven months, not one (two) weeks. So......So nothing more...But, Croatian food is, as I have experienced it...limited.... And guess what, after all this stodge. I still weigh 67 kilos. Not one gram more than I did 40 years ago. And...Jolly's, in Sibenik, yesterday restocked their freezers with 'pizzas' I bought ten! Wonderful. Croatia is like nowhere else I can think of. Anyone, anywhere, who thinks they 'may' be able to 'escape here'. DO IT! You will have to work your way through a fierce system for an alien but....just do it. Guest 1. Do it!!! End of story.

Wow, I'm away from the computer for three weeks and this place turns, as Alsdoubles has said "hot"!
I never thought a debate over food would turn itself into a "let's bash each other's countries" session!
Have been enjoying the wonderful variety of food on hand in my native Canada...but I find myself missing the awesome grilled fish and seafood of Split. Not to mention the cheap and delicious steak. Never ate juha in my seven months in Croatia, so I have no idea why you all complain about the neverending soup! Never actually seen ANYONE in a restaurant in Split eat soup!
Canadian wine I will definitely miss though. Too bad we don't export, vineyards are too small.
Alsdoubles, I'd bring you some tinned beans, but I sent them to Haiti instead. Figured they needed it more than you, since they have no food whatsoever right now. Then it made me think how we're all so bloody lucky to have enough food to eat at all, maybe we shouldn't complain. Could be worse. You could be in Iraq, Haiti, North Korea, Chechnya, Jamaica, Afghanistan...need I go on?
Stuff yourselves and be glad!!! ;D

Shannon,
You are so right! Thank you for your comments. We should be thankful for every meal we eat, who knows it could be our last! We should pray for the people's of all the countries you've mentioned.

Guest 1 I've read through this 'three chorus' of Danny Boy' food thread, and I've lost, the thread. What bet? Some of the days I look at this board I may be in a bad mood. Like someone has presented me with roast octopus, and then asked 'dobro?' And if you nod your head, you get another trawler load on your plate. It's like that Croatia. And you can't even say no politely. You still get more.
Road kill...They cook it. I've ate loads of it. Looks like rod kill. Blubber, veins....autopsies, cooked.
And I love the entry about praying for people who have no food in the world, from Pacific Star. And Shannon is on this trip also.....Pathetic. I got food, I got food. End of story. Those who haven't - haven't. Yawn. Can't help em. But, god, the beans (someone mentioned) really should have come to me. My need is greater!
Never ate juha...Juha is great. They have special juha pans in this country. Bucket size. And two handed samurai ladels. Fantastic.
Had my first vat of this years vino today.....headache!

Well, I really didn't expect any sympathy for the plight of the rest of the world's people from Alsdoubles, since wasn't he also the one who made some terrible comments about the poster who's friend had died in an auto accident?
By the way, where is the moderator when people write these kind of comments?
But thank you Pacific Star, for your kind thoughts. I'll some those prayers tonight.

Shannon,
Your a sweetie. I guess were one more thing for the Senior Member to complain about. I realized when I voiced my opinion someone would comment in a negative way. But one bad apple won't sour this whole basket. I really appreciate the people here and their helpful ideas and interesting comments. Its a pretty nice family of friends talking about Croatia and encouraging each other to visit, enjoy and help rebuild a beautiful country. I love my family in Croatia, I love my home town and I can hardly wait to visit again and who knows maybe reside there. And most definitly eat there!

Colour in blood red where pink flows now, on a hot topic. These entries are priceless. Art-works even. And have to be from.....Americans. (I have some great American freinds, really!). Quote..."great family of friends" to save the world. To help rebuild this beautiful country of Croatia. Sounds like a George Bush speech writer this person. I too love everything and everyone. Groan. Croatia doesn't need or want this , I would suggest, hope. Well no. I am sure of it! Reality maybe, would be more worthwhile. But I love you all, truly! Question: Are you on the same suffering planet?

Pacific Star, Showing my mum this message board, she's coming to visit us in November for about 10 days.
She liked your messages, and she says not to worry about negative comments from fools. They will always be with us!
She's really excited to come to Croatia (although she will miss all her horses back home!) And her Yorkies...and her goats...and the cats..... Our church in Canada is praying for all our Christian brothers and sisters all over the world, and all others who need help.
Keep up the positiveness!

Shannon. I don't really know who your message was aimed at. Fools?......But I don't really care either. Horses. Yes...prized, but no horse racing. Cats, if your mother likes cats she will be in her element. We bought a house, and a few grim looking cats did the limbo under the gate on the first day. One, a disaster on legs. The walking dead. Moth-eaten, threadbare.....almost broken. We fed it and the all comers. Seven months later, four of the females have produced litters. Five have been dropped in our yard, two more arrived TONIGHT! We now cater for about twenty three visting cats. Each one a total character. And the broken cat we met on the first day? Is now beautiful, healthy, full grown. And is a regular vistor. She almost lives here. (As do the other 22, come to think of it.) The down side to this tale is Croatia appears to have no facilities for dealing with the millions of street strays who hang around trash bins, and produce kittens by the truck load. But if you like wild life, there is also fantastic insect life. Bird life, reptile life. And take up astronomy...the skies are spectacular. I saw the biggest meteorite you could imagine, burn up south east, on the 19th September. It was....well spectacular. Never seen anything like it. And, I would still kill for a curry. This is a 'food thread!'

When we were in Novigrad last time we bought some interesting-looking pastries from the bakery section in the supermarket. They had blue/black filling and were sweetish. The consistency of the filling was like ground nuts in some kind of paste, but the colour really baffled us. Can anyone tell us what it was that we ate?
Thanks.

Walnuts, probably. Walnut cake abounds here. If you are allergic to nuts.....Well I don't know what you'd do. Die probably. But I haven't heard of anyone doing that. When you visit someone you are lucky to get away with just the cake. Usually it's the full trip. Juha, meat, veg...it used to be vino...but now they're not sure if you're driving home.... I have no real moans....other than to kidnap a curry grand master chef...but, probably I've mentioned that....... And to throw you all. One visit we did, we got the meal, in reverse....The persuit came first, and the cheese...and after a twenty minute gap, when everyone was stuffed and retired to smoke and chill out and (hope) that was the end of it. When we all sat down again (11 in total), THEN came the juha and the boiled beef and carrots and the veal and the walnut cake...... All of this was accompanied by several vats of red wine...And after all of this, and I tell you no lies, I climbed a mountain with my sister in law, which was so full of jagged rocks at one point I thought International Rescue may be called out to get me down. All of this, reading between the lines is...Croatia is a place to go, to live, to experience. One tin of Heinz beans is still required, however. Just for change.
