speaking of saffron, you'll find that growing wild around the place as well. I was quite surprised to see it in the forest just up the road from me earlier in the year. Apparently it's ptotected and you're not allowed to pick it willy nilly.(now that's english) I still can't understand why there is not more fresh basil being grown in croatia. At Dolac in Zagreb, you can buy a small plant for about 2 euro , and on the lable it says it comes from a place on Krk. If you read further into the small print, it says it's imported from italy !? In Vienna, you can get HUGE Basil plants for 2 euro at the market. The amount of rosemary growing here is great though. At our place on Krk we have it, and it's great to use the sticks for bbq squewers, or use a bushy stick to brush the food with oil. Adds a lot of flavour.

i'm not sure the saffron growing wild is the same as the one used as a spice, but i'll have to check that. edit: it seems it IS the same plant

Gav knows his stuff. Jamie Oliver also recommends using rosemary sticks as barbecue squewers. It would be very usefull with lamb too.
