I am sorry to say but alot of older Croatians feel cats are a nusiance and need to just be killed.
The fact is if they spayed and neutered this ferral community you would not have a problem with these ferral cats anymore.
The fact is that it does not cost that much to spay and neuter. Many people do have the money for that but the thought is, it is not worth the money to do that!!!!
Unfortunately alot of Croatians are unsympathatic to animals feelings and circumstances not because of money but because of ignorance. I believe the younger generation is more open to helping animals than the older generation.
Government & animal organizations needs to make people aware of animals suffering. That way some people might get it and change how they feel about abandoned pets.

Totally agree Ghost, it is more about ignorance than anything else. A nationwide advertising campaign might help spread the awareness. My mother had payed the vet to sterilize two stray cats that were hanging around our house in Zadar and took them in as house pets . They bring so much fun and joy to all of us.

Emizzzz-are the people of Croatia really that poor? I saw a TV commercial running in the New England area of the USA (specifically Boston) where a charity is asking for donations of $150.00 to buy a 'goat' for a Croatian family so they have milk/food. Is this legitimate? I'm intrigued. Why is goat inverted ? What on earth could it be a euphamism for

Mr. Happy-the word goat is not inverted rather it is in italics to emphasize the word and my sense of surprise that this is actually happening. Yes-it is a commercial on T.V. here in the USA-the New England area from Connecticut, through Rhode Island, and up into Massachusetts (Boston). I have seen this commercial on T.V. stations in all 3 of those states but not here in New York City. The commercial paints a picture of Croatia as very poor and unable to feed its own-especially women and children. In sharp contrast is the www.Croatia.com website and the Vecernji List where photos of scantily clad Croatian young men and women on the coastline frolicking in the water. Here it appears that life is 'carefree' and the young people have enough money to play all summer. So-as I continue to research this country, I am beginning to see that Croatia is not unlike any other industrialized country with life on both ends of the economic spectrum. Some people are poor and some people are rich. I will be visiting the coastline in just a few short weeks. I am traveling to Italy and then to Croatia. I will have my 18 year old daughter with me and have become concerned that if the summer resort life is what I have seen in the photos, she and I may cut our visit short or focus on 'nature'. Most of the time we will just enjoy being on vacation (holiday as the English call it) but since I am a writer, I hope to be able to use some of what I see in future articles (and yes Croam-scripts). in the mean time, I will gladly spend my USD $ to boost the local economy in Hvar as 18 year old American females LOVE to shop! That is all for now! Ciao! AW

It appeared in quotes, not italics. I trust you understand my previous confusion.

Oh yes, no doubt you will jump on the bandwagon of current write up about Croatia, dispensing expert knowledge about this country in your articles, written in between shopping sprees and island hopping, while looking down on poor natives who can't even feed themselves.

"The coobled streets of Dalmatia are a no-no for your Manolos" Author: American Woman doing the Med ;D I sorry but it did make me laugh ;D American women.... If you have ever been outside of america you will find visting Croatia like any other vacation. No you will not see poor people living in boxes like you see in america. You will occassionally get gypsy begging for money on the streets but nothing like some big cities in America where you go down a street and get hit up by at least 10 homeless people begging for money. I had a job in San Francisco a while back and me and the crew went to dinner and in the course of walking from hotel to restaurant we were asked about 5 times for handouts. The people that asked us look like drug user. Same thing happen in Atlanta and a few other big city we worked in. ;DCroatia is very relaxed and you will find the people to be quite nice. Some city especially split and zadar have drug activity at nite but it is still safe in evenings there you will be around hundreds of people at nite sitting around drinking and relaxing. Hvar in evening is the same lots of people hanging around drinking coffee or drinks. There is nite club if you wish it. Walking around in evening is very nice. You have nothing to worry about. Just enjoy yourself. You are not there for open business or do cro government paperwork.... you are there for vacation and it will be fun and beautiful vacation. When you get back you can let everyone know what you think ;D
