The absence of lifestyle "gurus".
I don't know any Croatians who need to consult Oprah, books, or God forbid, personal trainers/shoppers/etc, on how to raise children, mown the lawn, boil an egg, what to wear, what no to wear, how to pack for holidays, how to get to know their dog/cat, even how to clean your house, for crying out loud! I like the common sense and practical approach to living in Croatia. I don't think it will ever change, even if the standard of living improves dramatically.

Hang on David, you're getting off the subject...you asked for good aspects of Croatia, but now you're starting to critique others' points and their opinions. Back on track to good things about Croatia, please. Ahem..this is my thread

I like the fact that the gypsy kids have the balls to knock on your door whilst you're enjoying sunday lunch and ask for money. Every sunday. They knock on every door... and in our block of flats that's a lot of leg-work.
Show's initiative - and keeps 'em fit I guess. In London they just prop up against a shop door, semi-sober, expecting you to put all the effort in!

I haven't seen anyone mention the outstanding natural beauty - which I guess doesn't really need mentioning.

Sell you the dream? On the coast, sailing. I think Croatia is a dream destination, sailing-wise. When it comes to Zagreb, I love it, I find it cosy and intimate, with a special charm of it's own, not duplicated anywhere else in Croatia. It needs more variety when it comes to shopping and dining, but I believe that will be sorted out within few more years.

I have one!!!
When you are walking around town and almost every youngster/teenager says "dobar dan" or "dobra vece" to you - just because you're a "grown up". Even when you're pie-eyed on the way back from an afternoon of heavy drinking. (I'm only 25!) The youngsters in Karlovac are very well mannered.
I was "warned" about this when I first went out there - but didn't believe it until I witnessed it.
I was told to say a quick "hello" in passing to every old lady/gent that walked past me.
- - - - - - -
The groups of kids that hang out around town (outside McD's usually) are far from intimidating - they're just there to do their own thing.
It's a different story in Brixton, I can tell you...

Davidzg, why is so difficult for you to tolerate other people's opinions? You are the most un-English man I have come across.

23. the poetry of Mate Balota
Greet the gentle bays, all the small paths, When I think of them my eyes mist over, Courage, my dear, let not others know Nor foreign eyes see the suffering of your heart.
