We have done this journey several times over the last few years there are a few options depending whether you want to travel along the Croatian or the Italian Coast. Our prefered route would be train to Trieste from Venice where you can take a bus ( nice air )conditioned coach) to Rijeka (the coach travels through Slovinia). From rijeka the ferry srevice (Jadrolina line) goes pretty much daily to Split. The other option is to travel by train along the Italian coast to Ancona where there are ferry's twice a day (10 hour journey but very relaxing) or the new hydrofoil which you would need to reserve. Not difficult or expensive (if you only speak English it is easier to travel through Croatia than Italy)

I did the journey in reverse the other week: overnight ferry from Split to Ancona, then the train journey from Ancona to Split.
The Italian railways website (www.fs-on-line.com) is pretty good, I find, for researching these sorts of journeys. I got a through train which took about four hours; there are rather more journeys with a change of trains at Bologna.
The railway station in Ancona is about 20 or 25 minutes walk from the ferry terminal.
