Save for the time I lived in Croatia, I've been driving in England almost 15 years and have never failed an M.O.T

Same here concerning MOT. Never failed other then brake pads once, and in all honesty it didn't cost a hell of a lot to change. I kind of know what they look for, so always just make sure my car is in good running condition. Runs better and saves it wear and tear in the end.

Lucky you ; I've had a 230 C-class Mercedes fail MOT somewhere in West Hampstead , London ( reason given : exaust CO2 ) ; then I drove it to another garage in Kensington , where it passed , with no repairs , nor modifications ; this hapenned some 3-4 years ago ; same again , last year , in Surrey : car immaculate , MOT failure ; took it to yet another garage , result : pass . I know of at least 3 other people with similar experiences . Got tired of it all eventually and registered it in Belgium , where insurance costs more but the hassles from MOT- s are lesser .

Makes me ask myself : is it only just South East England where all the motor-trade men are so wickedly crooked and/or totally incompetent ? On the other occassion , with a slow puncture , I went from a Quick-Fit to any Surrey tire-shop , tried 4-5 of those in Weybridge/Walton/Guldford/Esher areas ; noone could even detect the problem , much less suggest a fix ; a shame to the brain and what a humungous waste of time , with such pointless idiots , all of them ; got the tire diagnosed and plugged after this , in Zaventem , Belgium ; cost : peanuts ! ; it was good and safe for another 20+ K km thereafter , even at 200km/h on German Autobahns . Now , you tell me about living in England , this Millenium ?

Make sure you give your car a good run before going to the MOT test centre.
Many cars fail the emisions test simply because the system has not warmed up properly. If you have only driven a mile or so at 20mph......
Mine failed its MOT last year because of the "glue" left on my headlights when I peeled off the beam deflectors.
Cheeky buggers only tried to charge me 10GBP for "cleaning" the glass..... ;D

If your main headlight lence are yellow, take toothpaste or t-cut and toothbrush and rub. Should remove yellow tint (just make sure the bulb isn't a yellow light). Hehe!
Yep, get engine real hot before MOT. Actually, when you drive to UK, get some of that engine cleaner fluid and pour it in before highway driving and should help clean it up. I suggest you go ahead and get oil filter changes, air filter and even fuel filter, as that work is all cheaper in Croatia.
