I'm planning on staying in Umag for the summer vacation.
Thanks in advance

News to me. I've neither seen nor heard anything about it and I see Croatian papers and TV news every day.
Cheers

If i remember correctly the item was on the news last friday. It said that in the last month there were allready 3 spider bites at the coast (i think it was zadar) 3 bites in one month was excesive they said. It also said that because of the long heat spiders came from the mountains into the coastal areas.

Well i found the newsitem (dutch) www.telegraaf.nl/nieuwslink/teksten/nws.zwarte.weduwe.mensen.htmlIt basicly says in the past few days 3 ppl are bitten by a black widow compared to only 4 bites in 2002. Local authorities are worried about this number when the summer has just started. The newspaper Vecernji was the source for this story. Chris

Occasionally it does happen, but it's certainly no plague. We noticed a small scorpion at our doorstep this summer - too small to cause any damage, certainly not as serious as African ones. You are probably more at risk at your local Waitrose, especially if you like organic grapes, then you are in Cro.

It is highly unlikely that any tourists would be bitten. Black widow spiders normally affect local people, like shepherds, lumberjacks etc.
