Hi there - new to the forum and in dire need of some help. We have an old stone complex with some holiday cottages on Hvar and are having all sorts of septic tank problems. Our builder in his wisdom decided to convert an old water tank into the septic tank. It is filling very quickly and we are having issues getting it cleared quickly enough. We need to find a solution to sort a proper septic tank/soakaway asap and, having heard different advice, we are confused. Can anyone recommend an expert in this field (preferably English speaking)? Your advice and help much appreciated. Cheers Paul

Can't recommend an expert, but can tell you that we have to have our tank emptied 3 times a year (costs about £75 per annum) and we are fortunate the guy will come the same day you call him- our tank is about 3-4 cubic meters in size. We also have a seperate 'run off' for our washing machine to reduce the waste water being emptied into the tank (the bigget usage of water for us probably). I know of folk who have the dreaded 'black hole', but that is not an option for us unless we do some serious underground 'construction'. The price you pay I guess for not having a main sewage system in the village  |

You will have to get someone out there to empty it for you. Maybe check out you yellow pages for - èišæenje septièkih jama - clean septic tank.
For a long term solution you'll need to check with your local council when they will be laying down the main pipes (to which you will connect your tank) so that it goes out to sea.

A modern septic tank, i.e. bio rotor is the best solution. You can get it in different sizes. Go to builders yard in your area & ask about bio rotor, similar type of tank used in modern builds out in the country in the UK where there is no mains drain. They do them in Cro.

Paul - this is a nightmare area. We live in a development with a good builder and the septic has been leaking into our driveway through the soil. The concept of a soakway does not appear to be comm0n here. My experience is that the spetics have to be well installed, multi chambered and emptied frequently ! Don't do a halfway house on this ! Good Luck.

I have been using a septic tank and soak away system for the last 20 years and have had no problems. It is very efficient and needs emptying infrequently . The tanks are cylindrIcal and divided into sections for soil and grey water. The tank is an IMHOF type is relatively inexpensive. The expense is incurred excavating the pit and the soak away area which is filled with coarse gravel.
