Property Taxes ? Here is a little illustrative example , from the Capital of EUrope : on a 125 sq.m penthouse in a well-known-avenue of fancied part of central Bruxelles , compl. with lock-up dry cellar and a big lock-up garage , expected current retail value around Euro 325 K and which rents for only approx. 1.000 p.m. ( poor return , not ? ) : - the registered owner pays around 1.600 Euro tax annually , - the registered user ( who could be the same person , or not ) : another Euro 286 tax annually ( tax called : Chef de Menage ) . Obviously , Croats won't start at such levels , but : look where such taxes may bring us all to !?

The word on the ground is that the new "property" tax will be based around a properties value rather than its occupancy or square meterage. There will also certainly be a new law closing the current loop hole when selling a company owned property, which is currently tax free. Taxing dividend payments and share transfers is also being looked at. Potentially there is the option of increasing real estate transfer tax as well if they really want to close the market down. No way to not pay! This place is getting more like the UK everyday. ;D

You can see the government is desperate. After years of being in the same location, all of a sudden inspectors for water, electricity, garbage and so forth are making their rounds in my neighbourhood to make sure each household is on the books. Bet they'll find plenty of people bypassing the system, with all the illegal buildings that went up over the years.

The figures I have heard about how rich the church is in Croatia, perhaps they should be asked to contribute to the Govt coffers.
