and a real spiffing lass to boot!...... Has, in the last 2 years, had a biggish building job done on her house, a new driveway, a new roof, a new car port, new tiled floors (160 m2), newly skimmed and painted walls throught, a new terrace shelter, new central heating, new wall insulation and loads of bits she hasn't told me about ....... all done on the black. Does this make her corrupt?

When you have a government that cheats it's people so much, it's only fair that the people cheat the government back.

gmh , were you referring to U.K.'s current/recent governments , the assorted U.S. administrations since Nixon and Peanuts' Carter , or maybe Berlusconi , or the Greeks , the Roumanians , the Bosnians , our newly-elected EU-president ...? Seems hard to think of a government that doesn't lie to and cheat it's people ( although there are rumours that Norway just might be such an exception , maybe Oz too , to some extent at least...)

There is no selfish gain at the detriment of others so to speak.

Don't we all suffer from the black market "tax free" culture?

Don't we all do our darndest to avoid paying taxes Isn't that what good accountants are for I'd hazard a guess and say people in countries all over the world work for cash in hand. I'd say it's actually these people working for cash who are paying with cash rather than credit, and in turn this has got to be good for the economy.

yeah I wouldn't say that if someone avoids paying taxes that they are seen as deliberately corrupt. I mean most racing car drivers happen to move to Monaco or Switzerland and they are not seen as being corrupt.

Many would disagree , totally ; starting with the Roman Empire example , where the flat tax was 10% ( for which you got policing/law&order , plus army protection ) and that model lasted well , for many a year ; nowadays , the taxes are humunguous - and most payers KNOW that most of the tax monies are wastefuly abused by the ruling elites ( frequently : the ones who never even got themselves democratricaly elected ! ) ; and : "the proper economy" doesn't work anymore , not by Anglo-Saxon model anyway !!! We are all Doomed , mate !

I guess I'm in the same camp as Ray on this. I don't pay tax in HR so I shouldn't get irritated when I see how the zupanija spend their money .... Eeeezus i boze! Do they really need 6 cars and their own apartment in Brussels? They are just legal thieves. A small person of the feminie gender of my acquaintance pays over half of her salary in taxes and she takes the view that it's quite enough. Paying 23% pdv on top is killing everything.

pf , may I presume that even as Brit-expat/retired , you still can't get away from paying PDV , roads' tolls and any number of other Harach ? In which case , HR should actively encourage many more tens of thousands , like yourgoodself , to settle therein , soonest , rather than later , mefinkz !( would appear helpful with real estate sales , too - particularly i.r.o. the glut of apartments in Zagreb and outskirts ! ) And , what with the onset of 3rd and 4th ages in the life of man ( sadly : even in case of an Expat ! ) , there could yet be Fantastic oppotunities to earn off such settlers , by providing various services like frail-care , nursing , chaffeuring , home & garden & sexual & other assorted services , shopping , hugely-overpriced pharmaceuticals , massage , therapies , companionship etc ...now , isn't this a Zillion Kuna promising biz project , which even Alan Sugar wouldn't turn down ?

Well frankly Rib I am shocked! That such a fine, upstanding member of Croatian society should avoid paying 23% pdv on all of the work she had done at her property is outrageous. Imagine what would happen if everyone did that sort of thing. ;D No wonder the country has no money.
