Jeez , what a poor show again !!! 1 ( ONE ) sad goal , against a country with a population less than that of Putney of Battersea , nil action for most of 2nd half ; yea , as John McEnroe rightly pointed out in this evening's Wimbo reports : what a bunch of spoilt sissies !!!

The evidence I see is that football has become so well developed that any well organised side can make things difficult for anyone else no matter how big the population. The fact that Slovenia and New Zealand are there (and Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Sweden, Egypt, China, Turkey etc are not) provide a good argument. Maybe the Pitcairns would struggle (Pop 50) but size insn't everything!

Or , could it go like this : 22 overrated , overpaid drama-queens ( plus a few replacements ) strutt their simple stuff for 90 minutes , which usually includes a lot of acting , foul play , missed chances plus occassionally some incredibly filthy , unsportsmanlike behaviour ; whether they win , lose or draw , they'll remain hugely overpaid ( like western bankers , politicians , public servants and suchlike ) and nothing bad will ever happen to them ; after the "performance" , which rarely fails to disappoint , they get 4 or 5 days off , 'till the next , equally dismal , showing ...

Same goes for most soccer players. Also Holland was again a horrible match, not worth watching and when they play like this they don't deserve nor belong in the next round. Slovakia was playing very well, Brasil and Argentina are superb, so my guess is we will see Argentina and Brasil in the final.

When have European teams ever done well outside of Europe? This should come as no surprise to anybody. Could be worse... we could have not been there at all. this is a fairly mediocre England team... the only player who is consistently outstanding is the much derided Ashley Cole.
Capello who was previously beyond rebuke has also had a stinker... it didn't take hindsight to know Green, Swp and Heskey were poor inclusions in the team.
If he'd have played 4-5-1 with Gerrard behind Rooney... Milner right... Cole left I believe we'd have taken 9 points and be left with the much easier game of Ghana in the next round. Regardless we never had any hope of winning it, so let's just enjoy it whilst we're in... there's many nations who didn't even get that pleasure;)

European teams have always struggled with the South American climate and their insistence on using the smaller/lighter ball which has only recently been standardised by FIFA. As Cannavaro said today, European countries are relatively rich and attract the best players. Only 42% of Serie A players are Italians and, as he put it, "top drawer" home grown players just aren't there! The ageing Italian team has no obvious replacements. I believe the Germans are also beginning to suffer the same fate (I'll not bring the French into this) and the Premier League is festooned with non-English players. Cannavaro and Lippi are both convinced that the problem is clear (so do I) but I don't see anything changing any time soon.

Two weeks ago we were all lamenting the poor performance of the side, no we are all glad just to be in the next round.
Imagine being a French or Italian fan!
It seems to me that everyone has underestimated some of the more "lowly" teams such as the USA and Ghana, whos players are under less pressure and seem to want it more.
Who knows, one good performance against Germany on Sunday might just do the trick and get us playing as we all know we can.
And as a freind said to me yesterday, we are playing in our lucky red strip again............1966?
Cmon England.

Oh well only another four years to wait.
Hand of god!
Geoff Hurst's 1966 controversial goal!
Funny how things come back around.

The 1966 goal was a very tough call... this one was beyond ridiculous, who knows what might have been had we gone in 2-2 with the impetus very much on our side. There can be no excuses for the way we played however, it was appalling. We're not good enough, but we're certainly better than that.

Thanxxxx God , it's over ! The only thing worse than the England matches were the umpiring ( just how many errors , in each match , pray ? ) and the incredibly , revoltingly bad , arrogant comments from the BBC's team of commenting idiots - what an insult Gary Lineker , Alan & Co were for GB , on that count !

Well, they can never be as bad as the disgraceful performance of the Netherlands last night. 9 yellow cards of which 1 red, while it should have been 3 red. This had nothing to do with soccer, hopefully everyone will forgive us.................in due time.

People are overreacting about the aggressive play of the Netherlands, some will not be happy until it's a non contact sport. The magical Iniesta was diving non stop... that's worthy of a kick. Spain were boring everybody into submission... the talent they have they should attack teams not pass them to sleep.

Spain were boring everybody into submission... the talent they have they should attack teams not pass them to sleep. Alonso, who had to endure a karate kick from de Jong, described it "as one of the worst I have suffered". Most refs would have given de Jong a "red" for that, I am sure Webb did not send him off as that would have effectively ended the game for the Netherlands. They could have easily had 2 players sent off. Contrary to what you think, this is clearly the "new" way to play football, and why England will be second rate until the current crop of talented youngsters emerge from the footballing system and join the England squad. This may take 3-4 years.
