"It seems to me that everyone has underestimated some of the more "lowly" teams such as the USA and Ghana, whos players are under less pressure and seem to want it more."
Lowly USA team? How are they lowly, ranked #14 in the world? And they won the group. England tied the US and were lucky to simply advance. The reality is the USA has a good squad with nearly all of their players playing in top European leagues. England were once again overrated and overconfident.

" England were once again overrated and overconfident. As usual , with England , for most of my life's memories about the game of footie: but , these failures , like Lampard , Rooney & Co get overpaid : really & drastically , for achieving : nothing v. much !?

People are overreacting about the aggressive play of the Netherlands, some will not be happy until it's a non contact sport. The magical Iniesta was diving non stop... that's worthy of a kick. Spain were boring everybody into submission... the talent they have they should attack teams not pass them to sleep. Alonso, who had to endure a karate kick from de Jong, described it "as one of the worst I have suffered". Most refs would have given de Jong a "red" for that, I am sure Webb did not send him off as that would have effectively ended the game for the Netherlands. They could have easily had 2 players sent off. Contrary to what you think, this is clearly the "new" way to play football, and why England will be second rate until the current crop of talented youngsters emerge from the footballing system and join the England squad. This may take 3-4 years. Wrong in every regards. I remember Alonso having his ankle snapped... it was much worse... England's next crop is not as good as this one... and this one was not rated that highly this time round... there was little optimism by those in the know. Spain won the Euros in fine style 2 years ago... 2 strikers... a little width... their current formation is nothing new... Milan have used it for years.. it's boring as hell. They have fantastic players like Silva they could have played at the expense of Busquets... it's a shame their negative approach was victorious. On the back of Greece and Mourinhio's success... defence clearly is the best form of attack. zzzzz

They're paid for their respective contributions to their club sides... who happen to be their employer. The players you've mentioned have been fantastic for the clubs for a number of years. Sadly in England ... club football is much more important than International football.
