www.unvamagazine.com/editorials/the-croatian-way/This is not a bad post by someone who attempty to explain croatian mentality. However i dont agree that Croatia has a high crime rate...or that the problem is entirely a balkan one...as from what i can tell through the media...Russian and other eastern european places have a similar mentality. Good try though...he or she does make some good and valid points...fits in with the way croatias politicans behave...and the desire for so many croats to get rich over night...no matter what. Connections and corruption...will it eveeer change?

Yeah its quite a good post and nice to hear someone talk about quite a blazingly obvious problem in society.
I think the attitude to crime in Croatia is the main problem. I don't get the impression that if someone goes down for a long stretch in prison, that they have done anything particularly bad.
I also think other Eastern European coutries have similar views to getting rich quick but in Croatia it is more acute.

Well I have been visiting Croatia for the best part of 17 years now and I dont honestly think that the Croatian mentality is that different from many other countries. Its not been in existance long enough to have developed its own 'mentality'
I would agree that a lot of people seem desperate to impress but surely thats just a reaction to the 40 years or so of Sot rule and you see similar in most of the old sot nations although I accept that Yugoslavia was a very different beast to the Warsaw pact nations.
Stick a Croatian in a suit and give them a rubber stamp and yes, they can become insufferable but once again this is an affliction that is seen in many nations accross the world.
If you want my honest opinion I think Croatia is struggling to truly come up with its own national identity for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which is that it was essentially created as a modern nation by Yugoslavia and that its trying to hard to shake off this influence.

At the risk of further entrenching a stereotype, I am not surprised by the view that Croatians have a mentality.
So do Brits by the way - we seem to suffer from the delusion that, whatever happens, whatever the evidence thrust into our face, that "British is best" and when we suffer, it's only because the foreigners are cheating. This is a result of the propaganda we get from our media and years of "Brittania rules the waves" we got from our school teachers. It's all crap but the stereotype remains true.
Croatia has suffered years of inequality in the judicial system and seen the bad boys get the cream of the cake time and time again. Hardly surprising that ethical behaviour is seen as a passport to poverty. If ever people get the sense that everyone is treated faily and evenly and that the rule of law actually works - only then will real "social" behaviour start to emerge.
I believe it's the same everywhere, Somalis are brutalised and see nothing but dog eat dog in their society. It can't be a surprise then that so many of them have no second thoughts about being hard criminals. If you brutalise people, you'll get brutes.

The opening line IN ENGLAND is an absoulte classic and makes me laugh all the time and i admit when i first came here i did it.
Now when i go back to the Uk i make a point of saying

Is the Croatian mentality really that bad in the actual? It seems as though no-one has anything positive to say about the Croatian psyche, even the Croats themselves. You guys seem to have enough problems with your neighbours running you down without trying yourselves to broadcast to the world an image, that let's face it,does not flatter you in any way. I am sorry, but on the surface Croatia comes across as a cartoonishly ruthless society lacking in decency or any of the core human values.
I am sure this not true. However, there is a large amount of negative WR (world relations) coming from both sides....those who don't like you and those that are you and also don't like you.
This seems a shame.A people cannot proclaim themselves valueless while their worst critics and enemies also do. Maybe you have great problems in your society at the moment brought on by transition. But if you keep selling yourself to the outside world as a dog kicking man,who would not kick a dog anymore only because he borrowed heavily to buy a pair of rich mans shoes and does not want them to get scuffed, then what are your potential world friends supposed to think about you?

I am sorry, but on the surface Croatia comes across as a cartoonishly ruthless society lacking in decency or any of the core human values. Could not disagree more. IMX * on the surface, Croatia come across as a very friendly, well-educated**, well-mannered society. Though driving is often too Balkan-like for my liking. It's when you dig around, or try to do a business deal, or do anything officially (permits, etc) , that you find far too many - far too many - instances of chaos, unreliability and downright dirty-dealing. * I hasten to add here that most of my experience in Croatia is away from the tourist areas. I think mass tourism is a recipe for social disaster in terms of the tourist and host nationalities building genuinely warm and friendly relations the world over. ** I accept that I might be allowing the many instances of good English-language knowledge from people you would not expect to be so well versed as skewing my judgement here. kesterj

I find much of the Croatian mentality quite "practical" they often seem to have a very simplistic way of looking at things which can be quite refreshing.
At the start of the recession for example, they really did not seen to worry at all, having "seen hard times before" etc.
I do wonder about their attitude/mentality to women sometimes though.

valiant2-If the Croatian people can push through the legal beheading of politicians then you would not have to worry about all your mentality quirks getting you a bad rap. The people of the world would be grateful forever. Madgolfer-What is the Croatian attitude to women? kesterj-Your response is heartwarming.Maybe I should not pander to attempts at stereotyping a nation.People are the same wherever you go. BTW,what does IMX mean?

Madgolfer-What is the Croatian attitude to women? Not wishing to generalise as I am sure this is applicable across the world, so answering from personal experiences only: IMX there is still a very antiquated attitude here toward women in business. I have been at numerous meetings where the "women" present have been treated very, very badly, which was clearly quite embarrassing to everyone else present other than the Croatian delegation. Naivety probably sums it up best. On a personal level its less obvious, but I have lost count of the amount on times I have seen a Croatian woman have to stop talking as soon as her "man" starts speaking, its incredibly rude. Social inexperience probably sums it up. Croatian guys trying to talk over women at a dinner table, in a meeting etc, good luck trying with Mrs MG ;D
