I have a very good Croatian friend who lived for years in England who has written this very informative piece about how to check on your property status online. The sites are in Croatian but she walks you through each step. This is an updated version of the page I posted on Riki's Really Useful Websites a few days ago, and includes a section on tracking registration in the land registry after you have got permission www.total-croatia.com/croatia-property-guide.htmlComing soon - an explanation of how to get an OIB number (personal ID number that you now need to register your property, open a bank account etc.) Coming soon 2 - how to import plants from the UK, the legal route. and lots more besides. The plan is to build up an interactive website of knowledge to provide the best possible online resource for current info, and to link to this forum for the debate (is that ok, Anna?) I have a few people who are knowledgeable on spet topics who will be contributing stuff like this, so if there is an area you would like to know about, PM me and I will see what I can do. If you have some knowledge you want to share, you can self upload here www.total-croatia.com/submit-content-croatia.html The site won't be finished until November, but the more contributions the merrier. Cheers.

Not to dish your site overall, but for example some of that info on what health issues to watch out for, what shots are "recommended" before traveling to Croatia is overkill.
Croatia health wise is not the third world, and unless you plan to go into the depths of the Croatian jungle (do they even have one?), then Hepatitis B vaccine, Rabies vaccine, Typhoid vaccine will noly turn you into a walking test tube dummy. Even the Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) shot is questionable due to side effects and more, and actually getting those sicknesses while on holiday here is very slim. Kids are more apt to get this while at school.
Diarrhea is a possibility, but all that other stuff is to much. I don't know any tourist friends that got all those shots are any listed in fact. All lived to tell their story back home that they had a wonderful holiday in Croatia, other then some light cases of sunburn.
For example the "measles outbreak" of 56 persons in Zagreb out of a million isn't anything to write home about, actually, we in Zagreb at the time hardly heard about it.

hi crojoe - thanks for your comments. If you are looking at the health page, sounds like you have had a good look around... That page is taken from another site as stated at the top of the page. I needed some initial content to go live and this and other pages will be replaced by original content shortly. From your posts, you are very knowledgeable on Croatia and have some great info to impart so get involved and upload some pearls of wisdom! THe more people like your good self that contribute, the better for all. More than happy to showcase your Croatian businesses for free.
You had comments on the health page - was the property page useful? Am in Zagreb next week on business and happy to meet for a beer if you are around. Cheers

Not sure about "my" pearls of wisdom, but did have a quick look around your site and not bad. I guess while giving advise, it's good to cover the good, the bad and the ugly, with the latter taken with a grain of salt, but keep the honest factor. This is where a countries PR pages often miss the mark, and only paint everything in a positive light.
Anyway, if a few jewels, pearls or gold bars of wisdom exit my brain cells, I'll let you know.
I didn’t view the property section as I have none to sell, buy, rent, demolish, flip, renovate or donate to some famous person.

You might want to check your word spacing, it makes the information a little useless when you read stuff like this...
The LAND REGISTRYTerminology:zemljisna knjiga = land registryopcinski sud = county court, the place where the land registry for an area is sitedvlasnicki list = ownership document, which is legal proof of title.izvadak iz zemljisne knjige = entry extracted from the Land Registry, which show current actual state of official ownershipaktivne plombe = (on
I'll take a look through your site over time and see what else i can come up with.

thanks to both above - spacing now fixed. Gav, would you like to do a page on your street performing? would get the ball rolling in Zagreb entertainment? crojoe, how about a page on Zagreb nightlife, or your top three bars in Zagreb, that kind of thing. The project is only a month old and won't be fully launched until November, but the more entries now, the quicker the resource will be fleshed out and the more useful for all.
As new pages of general interest, such as how to get an OIB remotely, get uploaded, I will post them here. All input and suggestions welcome.

Is totalcroatia going to be a commercial endeavour?

Hi Carol,
At the moment, I have not really decided. I need to get the site built and see what level of interest and cooperation there is out there. The primary motivation is to provide a platform where people can contribute current and diverse info to have a great resource for all. The first submission from the web, for example, was from a Dutch artist in Ghana writing about an interesting glass painting course in northern Croatia. Once that is linked to the activities page, here is an activity that few knew about but now the info is much more widely available. The other motivation is to give some smaller businesses with great products but poor marketing a chance to show off their wares to a wider audience for free. Dalmatia for example is rich in great small businesses (just in tourism) that few hear about. The more content, the wider resource, as long as it is organised and linked properly, and searchable.
I obviously can't write it all myself but I have had great initial enthusiasm from a number of quarters to help get this going. If everyone who uses this forum contributed five pieces (and you are one of the fountains of Croatian knowledge, Carol - would be great to have you involved), already there would be some great accessible info for all - the problem at the moment is that lots of great info gets lost in a forum post.
My initial thinking is that it will be an information resource, as commercial as this site, but the direction of the project will become clearer as people get involved. Why do you ask? Interested in getting involved?

Oh , but you fail to mention dozens of up-to-date medicaments , which Minister Milinovic and CRO-health won't let you have , even if you , the elder/sickly person , were to offer to pay cash for them ; true , you could let your chemist apply to the ministry to import those ( for some indescribable reason : only from Germany , always ) and then , if you are lucky that they get the import permit , then , eventually : a 30-odd Euro medicament ( as priced retail in the EU ) will end up , once delivered , weeks or months later , costing you nearer 150 Euros , now : isn't that neat ?

I could tell you more about children's entertainment, shopping malls, driving in Zagreb, dealing with accountants and visa's, MUP, then writing about the night life of Zagreb. In actual fact, I have no night life other then MaxTV, beer in hand, sometimes a glance from the wife, dinner dishes, walk the dog, kiss kids good night, hours wasted on clicking the refresh button over and over again on "Visit Croatia Forum" and trying to figure out how to become a millionaire.

This link is very useful and can save money. I have a piece of property that is tied up in court and on this site, you can get the court ref numbers and status. Any existing court cases or restrictions (inheritence, access, etc) are listed under the properties.
I wish I'd known of this site earlier because it lists all owners of a property. In my case the seller said he was the owner and produced a list from Katastar showing this fact. However there were some aunts, cousins whatever who owned 1/160th of the land. These don't show up on Katastar but they do on this link.
Totalcroatia - I will post some articles on possible property pitfalls and what to look out for on your site.

I actually made a page for the small Croatian companies www.croatiancompanies.net/I have started contacting some of them around, i hope once i have 20-30 in there, that they will start adding the info themselves. Anybody in the forum with at D.o.o are welcome to add also, i also have german pages whit same content, if somebody should be interested Morten

crojoe, that's the spirit - I would love a page each on children's entertainment, shopping malls, driving in Zagreb, dealing with accountants and visa's, MUP, even an intro to MaxTV. They will all be then linked to various parts of the site and suddenly we have a useful resource. For example, kids entertainment would link off the Zagreb page, the living in Croatia section - write about a softplay area and it would go into the kids softplay section along with Carobni Grad in Split. The more people round the country that take 10 mins to write about their local softplay, the quicker we have a great resource, which people can comment on and improve. As I said above, teh site is far from being ready, but I thought the property guide a useful post, but let's assume you do write about the topics above. Someone moving to Croatia looking for info on life here would immediately find current info on stuff for kids, accountants for business, visas, what kind of TV options there are, what the driving is like etc. Great and relelvant info and the more people who contribute the better. As long as I can manage the linking process to the relevant pages, it shouldn't be too difficult. Completely agree on showing the good and the bad. Building is an emotive topic (see the various gripes on this forum) and my interest in giving people as much info on the good, the bad and the ugly, so there will be some fun and happy contributions such as the family from Stoke who bought a 24m2 goatshed ruin and turned into accommodation for 15 www.total-croatia.com/croatia-goatshed.html as well as the darker side, all powered by your contributions. Riki, glad you found the link useful and great that you will contribute more to the site. Don't feel the need to stick to property - no Croatia-related topic refused! Am slowly adding more content and will post useful finished links on this forum (this link was quite popular from the initial feedback), but will not be ready until November I don't think. Your contributions would quicken it up... There are some topics which, like the permanent residency issue, that deserve to have a more prominent and accessible place to view, so my intention is to do a piece on that and then as comments and updated info comes, to edit the original piece, thereby keeping the info fresh and easy to access. Forums are great for exchaning info and have a huge role to play, but the information tends to get lost as new topics take over. Morten, great idea re the doo database. I will contact you shortly and would be great to meet for a beer next time I am in Split. Cheers

Well I am sure it will be a useful resource whether it is a money-earner or just a charitable contribution for ex-pats and tourists! At the very least you can get money on google ad-words but there would also be potential to tack on holiday let and property websites if you wanted it.
I don't think I have anything I could offer you that you couldn't do better yourself, whether it be property, culture or bringing up kids in Croatia. It is different for people from other parts of the country but both Hvar and Kastela radiate around Split, so we have a shared knowledge base... and you speak Croatian which puts you ahead of me.
I do wish you luck though with this new venture. It is good to be able to diversify when the recession is biting this deep. Why don't you write that novel though?

Hi Carol, thanks for your good wishes. The aim of any writer is to get published, so am behind you on that score. The bestseller will be ready one day... Yes, the recession has changed things for me for sure - being self-employed with young family on an Adriatic island during a property crash has not been fun, but have taken the franchise for ex-Yugo on two great environmental products ( www.europafilter.co.uk and http://www.leaqs.com) and initial feedback very positive. Both great environmental and economic savers for Croatian factories, and some kuna for ice cream for the kids. Would be great if you would contribute to the site, as you have so much experience of Croatia (I know nothing about Kastela for example, and your tussles with bureaucracy much greater than mine, as my wife deals with that - thankfully for me). Loads of topics come to mind that people would be interested in - tips for foreign kids to learn Croatian and integrate/cope with kindergarten/school, that kind of thing. Understand that people are busy, so have just had a thought - would you or others have an objection if I took some of your postings on these forums, edited them and turned them into info for the site? Happy to credit or keep anon as people wish. Cheers Paul
