My understanding was that this tax would not be due until my name was on the katastar list; now someone on the island where I bought a very small parcel of land is telling me I must first pay the taxes in order for the land to be in my name? I paid a sales tax in cash when I bought the parcel, but I must pay again to get "title"?

how did you manage to pay the sales tax without a racun? If you paid the tax office in cash then you'd have a receipt. I'm thinking that you've been conned here

ANYTHING YOU BUY ANYWHERE (CROATIA INCLUDED) MUST HAVE INVOICE AND PROOF OF PAYMENT, ESPECUALLY LAND, HOUSES, CARS OR ANYTHING OF VALUE!!!!!!!!

OF COURSE I have the bill of sale, showing proof of my payment - and I paid a sales tax at the time. But I have no OIB and as far as I can tell, the previous owner is still listed in the official land registry. I do have proof of payment, but without the OIB, can the government reclaim my parcel? I'm in the US trying to gather information where I can.

I guess I paid a purchase tax, but not the RETT?

Was the 'sales tax' perhaps the estate agents commission?

Its strange because people can't pay the RETT/ Purchase tax on properties at the time of the purchase. The estate agent or you will take the sales contract to the tax office to notify the tax office of your purchase. Then eventually (can be years later!) they will estimate the value of the property and issue you with an invoice for your RETT/ Purchase tax (in Croatian an invoice and receipt are the same piece of paper and they are called a racun). Then you pay the invoice.
I have no idea what you paid at the time of the sale. Maybe it was the estate agent's fees/ Maybe it was the notary's fee. Can you get out the receipt you got and tell us what it says in Croatian?
At the moment I strongly suspect that you've been conned and that you've paid someone a bogus bill. That might also explain why your name is not on the ownership records... because someone (the estate agent usually) would have had to notify the land registry and the katastar offices of your purchase.

My important papers are in a safe deposit box in a different state, I'll collect them next week and report back.

And get your OIB - it doesn't take long for one to get issued. We didn't have an OIB then but of course it's necessary to have one now. NEVER, NEVER part with your money without OFFICIAL receipt. We did final transaction at the notary.

Hi all, I know all about tinicas situation, she has never paid any taxes whatsoever, she either got the situation all wrong, or she is doing the conning, she was told at the time of purchase, after she got permission from Zagreb, she would then have to pay rett, she then disapeared off to the states, never left any contact details with the lawyer and now she is crying wolf

Ooh, this is getting interesting. So what exactly was your part in this deal yeslehc ? If you know all about her situation, could you tell us what was this 'tax' cash payment she made at the time of sale ?
A lot of people could learn something from this situation.

Are you in contact with tinica then yeslehc?
You obviously know a lot about the situation and it sounds as though you could help sort this out for her.
No one is being "nosey" its an open forum post for anyone to read and reply to.
Sounds like a simple misunderstanding to me, do keep us all updated ;D

first off let me apologise to GBH,it is an open forum as you say madgolfer,I am trying to help her,she has been told at the time of purchase and again recently, that she would not get title until she got permission and paid her taxes, she has permission, all she has to do is pay the tax, as I said in the previous post, nothing was paid that could be constured as tax, when she purchased, she most certanly has not been conned, thats for sure. will update you
