I'm not in real estate, but isn't a d.o.o., a Croatian company, be it owned by a foreigner or not? Would it not then allow you to rent a place, and after taxation the company owner can collect profits?
It is also possible to hire yourself to work for your company. It all sounds bazaar, but I understand it's possible. Working for your own company would be the only way say for you to claim such things as fuel use, certain percentage for business trips and so forth. There are a lot of tricks of the trade, all perfectly legal.

You would think so wouldnt you , but the powers that be for some reason dont agree and the answer is NO. Once a d.o.o applies for the licence, then the property must be a commercial or touristical property

Thanks very much UTV. Two more questions if I may?
1. When I got my permanent residency last year, the police told me I now have exactly the same rights here as a local, with the exceptions that I can't vote and don't have a passport (although I can now apply for the latter). That would seem not to be the case, if the licence application is different for locals and permanent residents. Is there a resource (presumably in Croatian) online where one can learn more about the rights of permanent residents here?
2. Back to rentals - do you have a link to the current laws on getting a licence? Have some other friends coming this week, who bought a 2006 apartment new with all the right permits, are in the books, and only just had their water connected. They bought in private name and have been told they cannot get a licence. Again, this can't be a unique situation - what's the advice?
Thanks again. Cheers Paul

Re permanent residents rights, I have no idea.I know we have more when we are physically in Europe. Re laws, There are literally hundreds of them all intertwined, I just know what can and cannot be done by exhausting every avenue. I do not have a list of them all as my computer memory is not big enough......We use several ways of gaining information Every time we have an idea or theory we go to the catagorisation office and see how far we can take it, see if it can be done, if not why not. If it can then we pursue it. The offices are usually helpful, but make sure YOU ASK questions rather than be told answers. My wife also keeps an eye on the NN web site but another good source of information is our local public notary office. We are there every few weeks and always check with them. If there are changes in law, or things need to be done then they tell us . Paul, I do have the 13 page list of the required furniture in croatian that you are welcome to, just Pm me your email and i will send it Most questions and anwers on getting a renting licence can be found on our web site and the direct link to the licence section is www.istria-realestate4u.com/istriarealeste-facts/catagorisationofpropertyforrent.htm
