Dr Ivan Cehok, Varazdin's famous jesus lookalike mayor has today been arrested in connection with accusations about illegal use of funds and/or resources over recent years in the city of Varazdin and is accompanied by a number of local people in connection with similar investigations. Cehok is now being held in detention. His arrest follows the recent arrest and subsequent release of the head of the city Parks department who may face charges at a later date. It is understood these arrests are deemed necessary to prevent these people from interfearing with the ongoing investigations being undertaken by USKOK.

What is the use of sending them to jail if no real charges are brought forward and we see no convictions? So far, there have been no real convictions of anyone of great importance. I don't agree sending people to jail if no convictions. This is a bit like Gestapo tactics, guilty to proven innocent. I'm surprised that the EU hasn’t said anything about it. To be fare on the mayor of Varazdin, he has probably done more for his area then most Mayors or MP's in Croatia. He probably had to break some rules to get anything done.

Put all CRO politicians in jail, and after investigation release the innocent. This would be the best solution.

Bad for Varazdin in that the area was known as progressive and energetic but now it looks as though grubby hands have been in the cash register all along. Crojoe has a point as the city does have some good commercial activites and there are some reasonable jobs to be had. However, the chattering classses point to vast sums of money having disappeared into the bottomless pit of recycling (the lady in charge of a similar enterprise was also arrested recently) plus a local park has been "swapped" with a more commercial site plus how was it that some city land was sold into private hands and then, alledgedly, immediately sold on to private company for a huge profit. The smell pervades everything here. I note the sabor took no time in removing his immunity although that's probably more about them than him.

As Ribaric's post states, "It is understood these arrests are deemed necessary to prevent these people from interfering with the ongoing investigations being undertaken by USKOK." The culture is about "networks" and "having friends in the right places", so it makes sense to me. ...if there's a sense of "justice will prevail" and "fair play for the ordinary man" then the police and investigating authorities can tread softly, but as this is very much not the case, then its a case of going in "all guns blazing" Chinese Democracy style. Capiche?

What is Cehok a "doctor" of ? ( been watching Croatian TV a bit too much , of lately - a sad case of certain nostalgia ? yet : in my 60+ years of life on varios continents , I've never yet experienced another country where just about everybody is a prof. dr. magister scientie dipl ing and half a dozen other academic pre-fixes , even if they just present a 2 minute weather forecast ... BTW for which the French or Belgians would only just have some attractive thin girl in a mini skirt , no magesteriums nor professorshops required to tell us that it could be sunny , or rainy , next Monday )

I mean, even when I go to renew my visa each year I am asked my the police my schooling, what degrees I have etc (don't they have that info on file from previous years or are they looking to catch me out on a lie?). What education I have doesn’t seem to have an effect on my business (still got to work hard) or visa. Sadly, all my name card title says is: Director. Otherwise it would be jack of all trades and master of none... in other words a looser in the world where titles are important.

Makes you think : with all these man and women with the multitude of all those fancy titles , how come we have not overtaken Switzerland , Japan , the Skandies and the rest , in economy and well-being , long ago ?

Thanxxxx! A very practical "profession " , no doubt ; I'm somewhat surprised that he is not yet a prof . , mr. sc , dipl ing and all those other beautiful titles I see on HR-TV daily ; no doubt , there was something in Varazhin , that prevailed ?

Doctor Who? "Spin-Doctor" might also be apt. Out of all the "mayors" he certainly stood head and shoulders above the others in terms of being progressive. Which political party is he in by the way? That may have some relevance what with the general election fast approaching. Some people might say that hes being moved out of the way just in case he runs for "higher" office than just mayor and MP. IMO having two senior roles (MP and mayor) might not be in the best interest of the people, who is he working for?

And there are plenty more examples......Zagreb County State Attorney’s Office has raised charges against wartime Assistant Minister of the Interior Tomislav Mercep, suspected of crimes against civilians. Mercep is accused for the killing of 43 civilians committed by troops under his command. He is also held responsible for the disappearance of three persons from Zagreb, Kutina and Pakrac area. Mercep has been in detention for the past six months. Had charges not been raised, he would have had to be released as this is the maximum time one could be held in detention without an indictment, daily Jutarnji List writes. The 59-year-old Mercep is currently in a spa due to his bad health. He suffered a stroke four years ago. Immediately upon his arrest on 10 December last year he was placed in a prison hospital. Mercep has claimed he is not guilty, daily Jutarnji List writes. OK its a completely different case, but anyone in a position of power, or previously in a position of power, must be shaking in their boots about now. I wonder how you get into the business of building prisons?
