Looks like we are in for a truely traditional British spectacle this weekend in celebrating her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. Three cheers for her majesty on 60 years of incredible dedication, public service and personal sacrifice. Long live the queen! ;D Hip Hip! Attachments:

@ MartinM - Paaul McCartney was absolutely terrible - got worse with every song he attempted to sing. Ditto Cliff Richard. Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Grace Jones and Kylie all seemed to get it right. However, the river pageant was a great thing to see - rubbish to watch on television but seeing 1,000 boats go past you on the Thames - especially the ones being rowed - was amazing.

Just so our Croatian friends don't think we're all potty.
As a republican, like at least a third of the people in the UK, I thought the whole weekend was a load of sycophantic doo-doo. If it had happened in North Korea we'd all have been complaining about brain-washing by the government media.

sorry Anton, but I love the Queen and regardless whether you are a royalist or not, you cannot deny that she has worked hard for 60 years to serve her nation - how many people are still working full time at 86 - and what about Philip at nearly 91??

If all you need to do is wave at people and eat rich food for sixty years at other people's expense then I can provide a list of volunteers to take on the role.

She's done a lot more than that in her lifetime, Anton! There are not very many women her age who'd even be willing to do that river pageant, never mind everything else she does. Credit where its due.

Went to a couple of Jubilee street celebrations and it was fun. All that happens in London is the final, the big show but I would say it helped bring the people together for a week to think about more then recession, failing Spain, political bickering and so forth. I guess you could say it made "some" people proud to be British. The big players like Tesco banked a billion in profits, so it seems someone somewhere celebrated. About the Royal family, well, they might not all carry their weight (more like dead weight), but some of them are worth their weight in gold. The amount of money the UK makes from tourists going for that fact alone is huge (although it now seems the Chinese are capitalising on this big time with all souvenirs being made there). It's all history, the rich ruling the poor and if it wasn’t them then it would just be the bankers, the government and I doubt we would be any better off. A bit of pomp never killed anyone unless you where in France. Ok, now time to get behind the British Football team, although after today’s match you might think the French deserve to win.

Hi Carol Sorry I just remembered she also cuts ribbons and travels on boats . If you can think of anything else let me know.
Crojoe. My last words on the subject. It's because of the social elitism represented by the Royal Family and the preconceived assumptions of superiority that we end up living in a country where most of the institutions are run by clueless public schoolboys (including the banks). No wonder most of them are smiling they're perpetuating the biggest confidence trick ever and leaving some of the more able in our society twiddling their thumbs in the dole queue. As for tourists of course Italy and France are devoid of these. p.s thought England played quite well. We seemed to at last have a team that cares when they pull on the England shirt. A win in the Euros! That would be something to celebrate.

I woz there! watching it on telly from my hotel room as the rain clearly dampened my royalist tendencies .... which I don't have. London was hopping and it was a good time to be there but that bloody climate!!!!!!
So what's going down back here in Sunny (I understand it was until I stepped off the plane) Croatia? Is Cacic in jail yet? Any ministers sacked?

Has she done a proper days work in her life? I thought Phil the Greek retired in 1945?

The thing is I am not very royalist, so I'm not very comfortable giving a long description of the Queen's last 60 years by way of a riposte. However, its as clear as day that she does more than just cut ribbons and live a life of tax-payer funded luxury. e.g. the tours she goes on sound glamorous for the first 10 seconds but then you see her sitting through hours of long speeches and boring dance presentations and I switch the TV over. I wouldn't fancy attending even one event at my age, never mind again and again until I die.
