It seems a touch shill-tastic for me to post this as my inaugural contribution, but I'd just like to draw people's attention to an event taking place in Zagreb on October 28th. An expert on the Croatian language will be giving a talk on the history of the tongue, the difficulties in learning Hrvatski, and so on. We're hoping to connect people to one-on-one teachers, or more conventional classes, etc., so that they ultimately integrate better into Croatian life. Too many of us here get by on broken phrases, which isn't helped by the fact that all our friends here speak great English (or German as the case be). www.facebook.com/events/241652565988029/This takes place in the Lisinski Concert Hall, and the venue has graciously offered some free tickets to be raffled off on the night to participating guests. There is a nominal cover charge to cover costs, but if it helps you get on track to becoming fluent in Croatian then it's well worth it. Hope to see you all there.

Good luck, and yes a bit shill-tastic to be promoting your companies promo event. But hay, you might get a bite from the 10 or so active members on this site. Now, if you invited some to a football match I think you would get a bigger turn-out.

If we saw an extra 10 people on the back of this post then it would be deemed worthwhile. We just got sick of all the expat groups looking to segregate overly - party here, meeting there, etc. Now, granted I've been on a museum tour where there was no English translation available to me, and even if I spoke the tongue I'd struggle to follow given the subject matter, but still...
As for a football match, well keep an eye out for Let's Talk - Sport, which we're hoping will cover more than just football, including American Football and Cricket (Croatian teams obviously).

Well, if the the truth be known, the foreign community is quite small in Croatia. A few years back (prior to the clamp down MUP tried) I found out there was a total of 5000 registered foreigners living in Croatia. Of that figure 3000 plus where Bosnian alone and the rest a mixed bunch. Having attended AMCHAM events for the 4th of July each year, the British C'mas party, the American school open days and a number of other functions you kind of get the feeling that foreigners are in short supply. At almost all these events they are Croatian American's, Croatian Aussies, Croatian British (I'm yet still to meet a Croatian Asian or Croatian African person) or one partner is Croatian and the other half (wife/husband) is a foreigner. Many people are then connected in some way with an Embassy, so here for 4 years then move on. When you have those comedy tours or quiz nights, the vast majority of people are Croats that go to them, not the expat community. Probably the largest group of foreigners that get together are either at an IMF meeting, the baby group or IWC meeting (the rest are meeting at the US embassy). I remember once attending a meeting with MUP put on by AMCHAM, and even at that there where more Croats then foreigners there too vet their anger about silly visa restrictions to downsize the foreign invasion (OK, the Chinese invasion if truth be known / now they want them all back to invest). I have noticed that most "working" foreigners or expats don't want to much to do with the expat community. You then got those who live like hermits, tend to shy away from big events or don't want to get too involved and and/or becomes someones blip on the radar screen. Not forgetting the growing retired community who want to be left alone. One starts to respect the fact that we are 1 in a million. I think this is why when a story hits the HR press that someone wants to setup a "fruit juice business in Croatia" it makes headline news, or some movie star got off their yacht on to Croatian soil (while on tour of the Med.) they make a big fuss about it. So, here's a big thumbs up to getting 10 people from this forum to your language lecture. A noble cause and I wish u success!

Well I can confirm that MUP do have the knives out for those EU residents whose home state has put in place a limit on Croatian workers... (mine own home country is not one, thus I have already received my 5 year permit - also I married a Croat).
I can appreciate those foreigners looking to keep apart from others also... I was one for my first year here.
