Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the actual health care costs are that you are forced to buy in order for one to get residence. What is your yearly/monthly cost? Can you pay it all at once? If you apply for a residence (and consequently must pay for the health insurance to fulfill requirements) and get denied can you get back some/any payment made?
Thanks, LB

In particular does anyone have experience with new applications for residence, in which i've read that a 5,000 kuna inital fee is also required. "In the last year, the laws have changed. For new enrollees in the Croatian Health Fund, an initial payment of 5000 kuna is now due in addition to the monthly payment." - off a website (late 2013/early 2014)

ugh i can't find it now. The page was more or less a complete reprint of a chasingthedonkey article with this caveat added. The reason i found it was because a lawyer gave me this info and i was quite taken back by it, so i started to search to see if i could find any information on it online. I'll dig around and find the site, just need some time.

In my experience, it depends upon where you are resident and which person you encounter at the front desk. I was asked for 2 years payments "to start you off" and "in case you are already sick" and then a pro-rata monthly payment for what the finance minister decreed was the minimum monthly salary for a company director. When I pointed out that my company was not the basis upon which I obtained residency, this was deemed merely "a technicality". The following week I returned to encounter a different person who said it's based upon the minimum wage because I am retired, roundly 417 kuna per month with no up-front cash payment. Of course, I took the latter option and have had no problems since. Others of my acquaintance have not been so lucky.

Yes, this was my experience. I had to pay the equivalent of one year's contributions upfront, an amount that came to about 5000 kn. Then 417 kn per month.

This is about twice as much as my monthly payments into the Hungarian state healthcare system which is one reason I hope to remain officially a Hungarian resident with a holiday home in Croatia (I get a lot of holidays!). I suppose it could get difficult if i need any long term medical help as I know the EHIC card is mainly for emergency treatment.
