A long and somewhat classic Croatian story but hopefully someone on this forum can assist with the name a "good and reliable" English speaking lawyer in Zagreb. Two years ago we bought a car in Zagreb, in my wife's name (she is Croatian and the car had ZG number plates). We didn't register the car into our names immediately because my wife's ID was in her maiden name and based in Rijeka; we were in the throws of changing her ID to her married name and current residence in Korcula (a long and painfully experience unto itself :-) ) . The company was happy that we maintained the original registration (their name) until we resolved my wife's ID situation. Three months ago armed with my wife's new and correct ID card we tried to register the car in our name and were told that we couldn't because the company we purchased the vehicle from was insolvent and had unpaid PDV dues to the government, even though they were solvent and without governmental debt when we purchased the car ! All doable but living in Korcula it is difficult to locate a worthwhile lawyer in Zagreb to resolve this on our behalf. The police in Korcula assures us that it is a mere formality to resolve and all we need is a pro-active Lawyer in Zagreb. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to say, I've watched this situation play out before. The porezni ured want their money and, as far as they are concerned, the car is still owned by the now defunct company. I'm sorry to say that, despite a receipt of purchase the car was impounded by the court on the grounds that ownership was never changed. Luckily, my friends didn't buy a hugely expensive car and decided to take the hit, mostly due to having no faith in the justice system. Did you get the transfer of ownership notarised at the time of purchase?
Sorry, I don't know lawyers in Zagreb, only in Varazdin.

I was thinking that it was exceptionally nice of them! You could've crashed it, or much worse, and they'd have been answerable.
How did you go about getting the MOT and insuring it if you didn't officially own it?
Sorry - I don't know any Zagreb lawyers either. This is the second time you've asked for a lawyer recommendation from what i remember. the first time was over a dispute with neighbour. (Do I remember right - was that you?)
Getting a lawyer to negotiate for you is one thing, but for the sake of your won sanity don't go down the court route.
