I need a bit of advice - I need to send 100 GBP from my CRO bank account (Euro account) to a friend's UK bank account - what's the cheapest way?

Sending money in a foreign currency is the most expensive way to send it. Receiving money in a foreign currency is the most expensive way to receive it.
So, if you can either send it in kuna or deliver it in pounds, you'll cut down on the bank charges at one end.

My money's in kuna and Euros. Do you mean post it, physically? Any idea how much a direct bank transfer might cost? Thanks

You'll end up paying minimum fees. I'd guess something around £20. Money will be taken out by each bank that handles it along the way, unless you pay the whole lot upfront. So:-
Your bank in Croatia
The Croatian bank that sends money out of Croatia to the UK
The bank in the uK that receives money from Croatian banks - will take a bit extra as the money won't be in GBP
Your friend's bank in the UK - will also take a bit extra as its foreign currency.
I'd look for a non-bank way too. Could you buy soemthing on your friend's behalf? An amazon gift voucher maybe? Or better still send cash via a 3rd party.

Never use a bank, they're a rip off. There's a score of online transfer companies, all much of a muchness I have used this company and they're good with low rates. transferwise.com/

I transfer funds via bank transfer for £4, no matter how much the sum. If you have to change currencies then you'll have to settle for whatever the exchange rate is, no matter which method you choose. I don't have a personal bank in HR (I don't trust FINA) so I just send a monthly lump sum to a partner for £4 and get the cash from the bank. Zagrabacka Banka don't charge a receiving handling fee.

Thanks all for the answers. I had to send via bank transfer, because it was urgent - I think it cost about 15 GBP.

When I bought the house in Croatia the money was in a Hungarian account in HUF. If I had accepted the banks exchange rate the house would have cost me about 1000 Euros more than it did using one of the currency transfer companies.
