Hey guys! Moving to Croatia in a few months and have a burning question - Should we take our Estonia registered BMW 118i 02.2009 105kW with us and register it there, or should we try to sell it here and buy a car in Cro? I have seen threads about this, but the last decent explanation was in 2014, which left me with the feeling that we should sell the car and buy a new one in Cro rather than taking it with us. Has anything changed in these years? Or should I still expect to pay ~1500 eur in total for importing it? Or can I just drive it here with EE plates and bring it back once in 2 years for inspection etc.? Thanks! Best, Crispy

Nothing has changed, it's still a 3 month maximum period on non-Croatian plates. Sell it there would be my advice unless there's something special about this particular car.

Think EU law is maximum of 6 months before it has to be registered. Having said that I know a number of folk who never bother to re-register.
My advice if you taking up residence here is to sell it and buy in Croatia especially as it is 8 years old. By the way cars are not cheap in Croatia to buy....

Well, since it is in a very good condition, and I bought it for approx. 1000 eur cheaper than I would have bought a similar car in CRO, I am in a huge dillemma on what to do... in EE I can get really cheap motor insurance which works in all EU, and I only have to do the checkup every 2 years. But I can see how if caught, the consequences could be not pretty.

OK, so it seems that I will just come and see how it goes.

If your driving licence is an Estonian one there is no reason for the Police to think you are not a tourist or a holiday home owner. I've been driving my Hungarian registered car in Croatia for the last 2 years but officially my house in Croatia is a holiday home.

Actually, the car is registered in Estonia, as I am a resident, but my driving licence is Latvian, as I am Latvian. So yeah...might be weird for the cops. Edit: Still have not decided on how to proceed. I am afraid that the total cost of importing would be >1.5k eur...but I am not sure, I can not find concrete information on the procedures.
