You sound like you have a problem, if he doesn't like fish or seafood, as these are the main focus of restaurants in Porec. The Istra in the town is OK and has some meat dishes. The ones I'd think of as more romantic are fish restaurants though.

Just had another thought and I've no idea how romantic they might be. There are a number of places beside the main road down to Vsar that have spit roasts outside. I'd guess they are lamb or pork. What they are like inside, I don't know, but they may be useful anyway for other nights, if he prefers meat. I guess you'd need a car or taxi to get there.

If you want something really romantic, you should go to Motovun. This is a small medieval town about 15-20 minutes by car in Porec's hinterland and I'm sure it will be one of the highlights of your trip. This area is famous for truffles mushrooms. www.istra.com/zupan/tartuf/eng/menu.htmIn Motovun there are several restaurants offering all sorts of truffle dishes, from pasta to meat, but also many other traditional Istrian meals. All these restaurants are frequently visited by Italians during all year. They travel from Italy to Istria just for one day to have a nice meal. This should tell you something, because Italians know about food. Hotel Kastel's restaurant in Motovun looks nice and there is a great view from the terrace on the valleys down from Motovun (Motovun is placed on the top of the small hill). www.hotel-kastel-motovun.hrAnd nothing goes better with truffles than Istrian Malvazija wine. But be warned, truffles are expensive. And here you can see some photos of wonderful Motovun: www.istrianet.org/istria/photos/montona.htmGastronomy: www.istra.com/gastro/default.asp

I would certainly endorse Robert's idea, although it might be a bit longer than 20 minutes. Motovun is a beautiful place, perched on a hill. There is a film festival there the week of the 28th so if you want to visit then you need to be quick reserving a table. So many of the UK tourists miss out on these wonderful places because they arrive without cars and just stay in one place, whereas most of the other tourists seem to drive to Croatia. I was over in Istria a couple of weeks ago and didn't see a single British car, although every second one seemed to be Dutch, so it can't be the distance. It's a pity, because the British tourists often contribute more. The others arrive with their cars full of food and hardly need to buy a thing in Croatia.
Cheers

wow that sounds a very nice idea, if taxi's are quite reasonably priced then we might indeed end up going there, thank for that.Neither of us have ever tried truffle, I understand that it is an aphrodisiac .The more I find out about croatia and porec the more I wish we had booked for 2 weeks instead of 1!Still there is always next year! The travel agent we booked the trip with had just returned from his second trip there and was totally in love with it

Yes, so they say, truffle is an aphrodisiac. I guess it is a perfect choice for a romantic dinner .
