hi
i am going to be travelling to croatia in late september and staying until mid-to late october with my girlfriend.
i was wondering if anyone knows about any openings for english teachers or other part time jobs that are available in dubrovnik during that time of the year. is it easy to find part time work or not? what is the best way to go about looking for work?
also, does anyone know how much i could expect to play for a cheap apartment or room for the two of us in dubrobnik? i would only like to spend 200-300 euros for the month. is this possible?
thanks for helping me out casey

Unfortunately you won't be allowed to work, because you don't have a work permit. You can of course try to work without permit and hope they don't catch you. I must admit chances are slim, but still.
For an apartment for 200 300 euro per month you will have to do some negotiating. I know that in Zaton it will be possible, but then you would need transportation to get to Dubrovnik, so that won' t help you either.

if you have Croatian friends you can get an apartment for the price you are looking for. If you don't....good luck. Where are you coming from?

Dubrovnik is a ghost town during that time of year...it would probably be hard to find work even during the tourist season...even if you are a croatian citizen...let alone if you are not. If you don't speak the language then forget anything other than teaching English or some job that requires English. I doubt there will be a huge need for English teachers during that time of year but i really don't have a clue about that. Definately try...but be prepared to not work.

Hello!
My name is Helena. I come from Spain. My boyfriend got a indefinite job in Dubrovnik so I accepted to move here. We are young and I still haven't found any job. I used to work in a Translation Company as Project Manager, but since I got here I don't know where to start looking for a job.
I have heard that many Croatians want to learn Spanish so I thought that I could teach languages. I'm also fluent in English and French, so that should help, but I don't know where to offer my services.
Also, I'd need to set myself as Freelance if I do so, but don't know where to register in order to get the work permit. I still have two months of my tourist Visa, but need to find something before it expires...
Do you have any ideas where I could look for a job?
Thank you in advance.

Well I don't like the answer I'm about to give you but the fact is, you have absolutely no chance of finding a job here right now. To set yourself up as a freelancer, you would have to open an obrt (sole trader) or a d.o.o. (incorporated company), both of those options will cost you in excess of 200 euros a month regardless of your income. The best you could hope for would be to advertise yourself for private language tutoring, which you would have to do 'under the table' (illegally). Definitely you could do that without getting caught, but I doubt that you would make much money. Maybe think about setting up some kind of internet business in Spain and then just running that from here in Croatia.

Hi! Does anyone knows what type of job can I find in Dubrovnik during August-September? I'm from Venezuela but I have a croatian nationality because of my grandfather, so maybe it won't be that hard to find a legal job. I only speak Spanish and English, but I'd love to learn some croatian.

Hey everyone, I am a certified teacher in Canada. I wanted to experience a new culture and was considering moving to Dubrovnik to teach english or possibly in a private school. Does anyone know the need for english teachers there right now? Also I am aware of two school that are open in the city but I am unsure of the need and the pay, wondering if I should free-lance my services? Any help please.
Thanks, Jessie

Hello Jessie, Your's is a question we've seen on a number of occasions, there are probably some good answers if you trawl through the old topics. In brief, and as far as as I know, you will not be able to work a job in Croatia as a non EU citizen. It is the same if any of us Europeans tried to work in Canada. There are special trades and skills, doctors, scientists etc., who have a way to do this but I'm not sure teaching English is one of them. There is a demand for qualified teachers for whom English is their native tongue but you'll have to hawk your CV around the country to find a position and then see if you would be allowed to take it up. I understand you could open a business, if you are formally qualified, but you will need a fair bit of cash to do it and convince the interior ministry you can pay your way and take care of yourself. I live in continental Croatia so I have no idea as to how things are in Dubrovnik. As part of our family business, we do find accommodation down there for medium/long term visitors, mostly students, so perhaps we could help you there.
Good luck to you but please have a care about Croatia. It is a lovely place but very tough to make a living, probably similar to Mexico.

Hello Everyone, I am a certified teacher in Canada and having working experience in the UK. I was looking to move to Croatia for my boyfriend but just curious about the job opportunities for teaching English. He is from Dubrovnik, which I am aware is a smaller city. I have been researching for weeks now and I feel as if all the International Language schools are in Zagreb. Not sure what to do or how to start. Any suggestions or help would be great Thanks, J.

I have been researching for weeks now and I feel as if all the International Language schools are in Zagreb. Not sure what to do or how to start. Any suggestions or help would be great Thanks, J. You will need a certificate to say you can teach English. Croatian red tape makes it vital that you have as many certificates as possible to say you can teach English as a forign language. Doesn't matter about your experience, they just want to see paperwork. You will need a CV. I believe you will also need a work permit as Canada is outside the EU (you will also need a police check from Canada and copy of your birth certificate that is no older then 3 months.. get a copy just before you travel to HR). Unless your boyfriend has a job prospect in Croatia, if I was him I would stay in Canada (slim pickings right now and pay is terrible in HR). If you do get a job, make sure you get a contract (no hand shakes) as bosses in Croatia are notorious for not paying on time, making you work more then contracted etc. There is no such thing as "small claims" court. Don't be a push over here or you will be taken for a ride in the business world! Scenic wise that town is beautiful! You could always be a tour guide?
