We (a family of 5 = 2 adults 3 chidren aged 11,13 and 15) are arriving in Croatia from Italy on the 28th of this month July for 12 days. We have no accomodation booked as we thought we take a couple of tents and camp. Is this a mad idea? I am also overloaded with info and hence would love any suggestions on a route down the coast that would take in site seeing, sun sea and sand and national parks. We want to do alot but also relax as well. Any suggestions on campsites or alternative (available) accomodation would be much appreciated. We will have a hire car.

There are a lot of properly organised campsites in the Porec area,in Istria, which would probably suit you, at least for your first night. They are well signposted from the main road going South. You could ask there about somewhere for successive nights.

Croatian radio just said that the camps in Istria are full for the next 6 weeks. There are still places available in Dalmatia.

Grant I suppose that you have looked at the Croatian Tourist Board web site at www.croatia.hr/home.php?setlang=enwhere there is a list of campsites, many with e-mail addresses - it might be worth making your own enquiries about availablity and at least booking the first couple of nights while you see how things stand. As an itinary to see all that you mention I would suggest a few nights in Istria where you can visit the various sights in towns like Pula and Rovinj, a few nights on an island (either Cres, Krk, Rab or Pag)) for relaxation and a few nights on the mainland coast around Karlobag which would allow you to make day visits to any or all of the National Parks in the region. Your route (coming from Italy) would be pretty straightforward as there is a good road system in Istria, joining with the main coastal highway at Rijeka and with either bridges or ferries to the islands from this. Your route back would be much the same as there is really only the one highway. Hope this helps Sandra
