Hi There, Question we all know will pop up when Croatia sit down to talk about entry into the EU is in 2007 is,What action they are taken/will take to return non-Croatian's to their homes.
Folks, how would you answer and what actions do you feel should be taken as this will have a bearing on Croatia's entry into the EU.
I would like to hear all options that you feel may arise.?
Do you feel Croatia needs to join the EU?
Thanks Maja

To answer your question yes, croatia NEEDS to get in to the EU. Number #1 i live in canada and most people still call croatia yugoslavia, being in the EU will let people know that it is CROATIA. Number #2 if croatia was in the EU they would be recognized as a high-end country attracting more and more tourists bringing in more money for new buildings, schools, roads ect. so i think, since i am croatian, that we need to show the world the war ended and we are a liberated country ready for the world. any comments e-mail: lil_sexci_d@hotmail.com or reply. It would be very odd for Croatia to stay out of the EU!

If your neighbours are in the EU, it is not good for you to be outside!

Dee Dee makes a good point of country being more recognized in the world as for bringing more money in. However there are some other important issues such as security, investment of other countries into it more, and help from EU. First few years of being in EU is most likely not gonna benefit Croatia a whole lot because of certain regulations that EU imposses on new members especially in the field of agriculture and import/export.

I think Croatia will benefit hugely from EU membership.
From what I have seen, it has a magnificent tourism product, with easy access (and improving all the time) from Western and Central Europe.
It's young generation seems highly educated, with excellent multi-lingual skills..German, English and Italian especially.
EU membership and this education base will automatically attract foreign investment and high value job creation, with trade and employment being far more flexible.
It is spending money on it's infrastructure at the moment, visitor numbers are up dramatically....all the signs are positive !!

I thought the EU gig was it.
However, friend of mine says it would be better to side with the US during this time.
1. THe EU farm subsidies would negatively affect the way of life of life for our farmers
2. THe US is looking to pull out a lot of their troops out of germany. The US wants a warm water port in the region. Yeah, I hate bush too, but there would be a lot of money involved with establishing a US naval base somewhere along the sea
3. F... the hauge court. We have done enough kow-towing to Judge Carla Del Ponte.
I am leaving JFK on Sunday. I am bringing my girlfriend to the country. SHe has always worried that I have wanted a croatian woman. Her Italian family originally comes from Trieste. I keep telling her that this is close enough

Joining the EU is the only future for a prosperous Croatia. As part of the pre-acccession process countries get shed loads of money and support, plus it will sort out the legal system (or to be more precise will give the impetus to the current administration to sort out the judiciary before entry). On top of that there are the trade benefits and free movement of labour. Croatia is no Switzerland! If we care about our Croatian children and want a better life for them then this is the only responsible route.

Rich get Richer!!the poor stay poor. Some of the rules the EU lay down are a concern as I see Croatian farming getting the chop.We Irish have to fight tooth and nail to get a fair deal from the EU.Rich boys club.

GDP per capita in Ireland has risen over 15% in real terms since 1998. Ireland is a euro tiger which, if it keeps an eye on inflation, will be an economic powerhouse. The same could happen to Croatia.

if you people seriously think that by entering the EU Croatia will benefit as a nation then i really want some of the drugs you people are on.
first and only point ill make right now is, how will the majority of the croatian citizens, i.e. peasents who are already suffering and struggling to survive and make ends meet, survive when the prices of everything is jacked up even higher with entry to the EU. do you think that the other countries will help us, give money to give the unemployed, elderly and disabled? wakeup to yourselves

Just sitting here reading these posts and I guess I will throw my two cents in. I do think that the EU would be great for Croatia but I am not so sure if Croatia will be ready for the EU in 2007. There are too many aspects to look at, I do agree with some of you that our farmers will take quite a hit. About the comment from mate mislim nate, please do not even talk about the option of the US Army being stationed in Croatia. God help us all Sorry but just a few points the US Army Europe is currently in the hands of a Marine named Jones who is looking into all these crazy ideas of new places to venture. Some of the places he has in mind are Poland and Bulgaria. The US Army just did a huge training in one of these places to see how working with the local government would be. Sorry but the americans are not just looking for a port, they are looking at building bases and training areas that will literally tear up the land. Now some of these countries want the Army because it brings money, local jobs and so on. But Croatia is not ready for that and I do not think they will like it very much when somebody tears up their backyard! I sure do not like that idea. Anyway today they also announced concerns that this pullout from Germany might not happen until 2 years from now because of everything that is going on in Iraq. We are talking 70,000 Soldiers and over 100,000 family members. But all of this is still up for debate, because if Kerry wins his plans are a bit different. But even if they do this it is crazy, it just shows that the US has too much money, they build up all bases in Germany just so they can close it down and ship everybody off. What a waste of time, manpower and money would that have been?

Croatia will be a net gainer, for sure, in terms of subsidies. And trade = jobs = a route out of poverty. It's basic economics.
