true true....but for tourists it isnt a problem. the point of the highway is to join croatia together and by pay tolls croatia can receieve money to improve many things....about the toll thing okay yes its expensive but if people had good jobs and a standard way of living they could make up for 100 kn or however much it is. about the actual highway it has been waited apon for generations and generations and now that it is here we start to complain.....all we really do is sit around, drink coffee in cafes around town and complain about money and how everything is expensive. People complain about the cost of food and other necessities but YET they still are sitting and wasting money about three times a day in a cafe?!?!?! that startles me but about the highway any more opinions??

the problem is that most croats compare themselves to countries like Germany and complain about the high tolls instead of asking how much you have to pay on a French or an Italian motorway. In my opinion it is better to have an "expensive" motorway than none!

Still many Croats cannot afford it and use old roads. But for tourists it is fine!

I use the highway few times a year to visit my girlfriend down in Split. It seems alright to me. I like the highway though it does seem a little noisy when driving at higher speeds.

We noticed how high the tolls were, even though the new road is not even a direct route from Split to Rijeka yet (you still have to take the tortous windy roads in Sibenik and outside Rijeka) We were thinking that perhaps the high tolls were being used to fund the project, and maybe in the future, when they have reaped back the cost of building, the tolls may go down in price. Even if the tolls don't get reduced later, it's justifiable since the highway still has to get paid for. It's a huge undertaking, a very long road, and quite expensive.I'd rather pay high tolls than spend 12 hours on those awful local roads!
And for the record, we think the highway is excellent! And we liked the fact there were very very very few other cars on the road!

It's the emptiest, quickest motorway I've been on in ages! Of course there are some start-up quirks; the tolls are quite high for Croats; the petrol stations are unusually spaced (none up near the border, one every 3/4 miles therafter, or so it seems); every so often you have to return to the "coast" roads as there are still sections of the road that are not finished - but I'm impressed otherwise. Driving down from Trieste to Split and back again, I did not take a single wrong turning either way - a record for me and "continental" signposting (usually much more haphazard) - and I did both elgs in a shade over 6 hours each way. There's no way such a journey would have been so fast in the UK, that's for sure, but you can only judge how efficient the road is once the tolls come down and the traffic increases. Even the M1 was traffic-jam-free once...

Interestingly, I was at the European football championships in Portugal in the summer, staying in the far north of the country, near the border with Spain, and the toll motorways there seemed to be totally empty half the time too, which suggested to me that the tolls there were either too high or aimed at picking the wallets of tourists such as myself.

If you look back in history after WWII the US wanted to build this highway. All they wanted was to own the gas stations until the road was paid for then the government would take control of the sttations. But the government told the US no. So that is why the road has taken so long and why it is costing so much to travel. If they would have allowed the US to build the road we would not be talking about how much the toll is. I have traveled on the road a couple of times it is better than what was there a couple of years ago and when it is finished it will be a lot better than it is now.

the most expensive tolls are in Slovenia. this news says that highway might be done before deadline meaning full ZG-ST road by the end of June. 123 kn is a lot but old road is still an option and its free. So everyone can choose time or money

people dont spend that much money in cafes. usually they sit there all day with the same cappuccino all day. i think that the road toll is way too exepensive. it should be atleast cheaper for croatian citizens. i recently took the new road from zg to split. . its nice but the price is too high ,. and because you are driving fast , you waste 3 times as much fuel. i think that the freeway is going to improve the penetration of auto pollution into the beautiful croatian counbtry side and far untouched coastal regions. im definiotely going to stick to the old route through knin . the new freeway is empty but the old route is packed with traffic . i wonder why ? you dont need to be a doctor or professor hahha to figure that out.
